'Never mind that,' said Miss Trimble, as her pince-nez slipped off. Bets began counting. 'Who is impersonating Sir Nicholas, and Lady Candling, and you? And why?'
'Who else could it be -' Fatty paused dramatically. '-but the Lorenzos!'

It was Poppet. The tiny poodle attacked Pip ferociously, as Sir Nicholas/Fatty/Bill Lorenzo and Lady Candling/Fatty/Gloria Lorenzo egged it on. In the distance, a sweating Goon staggered towards them.
Gwendoline lay down, angry. She determined to make herself miserable and cry.

"My goodness! You're like a lion in lamb's clothing," panted Pip to the little dog as he struggled to get to his feet again. "Where on earth have you appeared from?"

On the ground, lay a black animal skin. Poppet had been disguised as Buster all along! Bets started to cry again. 'Shut up, Bets, it is only polyester,' grinned Pip.

The little group stood watching the incongruous sight of "Clear-Orf" bearing down on them as Fatty strolled forward, still in his policeman's outfit, and snatching up the Buster outfit he flung it at the angry man's legs.

As they turned to run at Fatty's bidding Pip muttered "What's the point? He knows who we are and he'll be round at our house before we know it, to complain to our parents yet again. I'd rather stay and face him here."

"Goodness me," said Daisy. "You surely don't mean that new rose tax I heard Mother complaining about the other day? What on earth would that have to do with Pip?"
