The four studied their suspects closely. Eventually Daisy said "I don't think either of those are Fatty. We know the vicar and I'm sure I saw Mrs Candling talking to that lady the other day and we know fatty was not around then. Mr Goon knows something. Something has happened to fatty!"

Bets' eyes started to well up with tears, and Pip groaned. 'Look here,' said Larry. 'Who is this Sir Nicholas Grenville anyway - anyone know?'

[Daisy]

Daisy groaned. "If only Fatty was here, he would know what to do next, but you're the leader when Fatty isn't here Larry, so what should we do now?"

"Right" said Larry. "We know Fatty isn't on the train and it would appear that Mr Goon knows something. I suggest we tackle Goon about what he knows and when we've found fatty we'll discuss this here letter"

'But Goon won't tell us anything,' said Pip, kicking a pebble on the road. 'Hold on, everybody, look over there - isn't that Buster? Who's that leading him?'

It was a man with a really long Moustache, which curled up at the end and the man wore rather official looking clothes.

He wore an eye patch over his left eye, was wearing enormous leather knee length military boots that clicked and and clacked loudly on the cobbled road,and had what looked to the children a stuffed parrot attatched somehow to his right shoulder........

"That must be Fatty!" exclaimed Bets. "Surely nobody else would be able to take Buster out like that!"

But just then Lady Candling swept over to the strange looking gent,gave him a big hug and said 'Sir Nicolas!,how marvelous to see you up and about again after your accident,how are you feeling?'

'Gosh,' said Larry. 'Sir Nicholas must be a very close friend of Lady Candling...'

[Nick]

"Better, much better" replied Sir Nicholas, "but whilst I was laid up in bed something rather mysterious happened. I've been writing to that young Frederick boy, keeping him up to speed but now he seems to have vanished too"

The four children listened to this exchange with growing alarm, wondering what they should do, when Buster suddenly spotted them and started barking joyfully.

Bets bent down to gather the excited dog into her arms and then suddenly burst into tears, hiding her streaming eyes in Buster's shaggy coat.

'Come on, said Larry,feeling sorry for Bets,lets go to the dairy and have some snacks,for some reason Fatty is not here,Pip would you be kind enough to ask that strange man if we can take Buster with us please?'
