When I was at a local second-hand shop I saw an offer for the first six books of Terry Goodkind's "Sword of truth" saga. The books advertised that according to Marion Zimmer Bradley TK is the treue heir of J. R. R. Tolkien. Usually it would have rather deterred me because I think "Lord of the rings" is rather long-winded, while "The Hobbit" is a rather good read.
I've read about three quarters of the first book, and I think it's a better read than "Lord of the rings" (so far).

Re: Terry Goodkind
Lord of the Rings is one of my all time favourite books. I haven't read any of Terry Goodkind's work. Another author I like in the same vein is Terry Brooks; particularly his lengthy Shannara series.
