So I thought I'd better look for a photo of the house!

Its remarkably similar to the house my dad was born in in the 1930's, Goppa Hall - same Georgian style of architecture, except Goppa Hal is smaller -

I keep meaning to ask you about this article which mentions Goppa Hall from 1945 and Margaret Mary Armstrong Rob?

Thanks for that, Pete - very interesting to read about this. Yes, I've known about that tragedy for many years, as my dad has often talked about it, and of her uncle who died in the war when his plane crashed. The Armstrong family bought Goppa Hall off my granddad in the early 1940's. :D It was always considered to be a house of bad luck. My nana lost a couple of babies there, which is partly why they sold it.

I actually based 'Four Thrushes' - the house in my novel The LAst Summer - on Goppa Hall. :-)

I'm glad you spotted Kings Mill House while you were in Great Shelford, Courtenay.

Interesting links - thanks!

So do I.  Very interesting to read about Goppa Hall, too, and your family's connection. The two houses do look very similar.

When I can, I'll post some photos that I took yesterday of Kings Mill House and the Shelfords — I still use a real camera, even though I do have a smartphone, so I need to upload the photos before I can post them!

Here we are with the photos from yesterday! :D

Image
Kings Mill House, Great Shelford

Image
Another glimpse of Kings Mill House through the trees (these photos are both of the front of the house from different angles — I couldn't get any closer without outright trespassing!)

Image
The actual mill is still there too, next door to the house, though I don't know if the building is in use at all now.

Image
The Cam just below Kings Mill. I'd have liked to see the house's garden, but it's all behind the house and can't be seen from the front (going by the satellite image on Google Maps, it's still quite a large garden and has a swimming pool!). Anyway, this picture gives an idea of what a picturesque and peaceful area it still is.

Image
Parish church of St Mary the Virgin, Great Shelford

Image
Shelford Delicatessen, Great Shelford
(Not from Philippa Pearce's era, obviously, but I'm giving it a plug because it's a lovely place and I appreciated a refreshing cup of tea there! )

Image
The Cam from the bridge between Great and Little Shelford — the water is probably a bit low for canoeing just now with the hot weather and lack of rain. I like the tyre swing, though!

Image
Little Shelford village sign. There was a panel next to it explaining the images on it — out of interest, the rocket shape in the lower centre is because Little Shelford was home to one of the Cambridge University engineers, Francis Bacon, who designed the fuel cells that powered the Apollo moon missions. The Nobel medal and world image at the lower right are for Professor James Meade, another resident of Little Shelford, who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1977. Not bad for a small village! :D

Lovely pictures... I assume the canoe was just round the bend of the river.

I think it is a black tyre hanging at the corner.

It is — that's a tyre swing, presumably one that children play on. I think Daisy is just joking about there being a canoe out of sight, since Minnow on the Say (which I've recently read) is based on this same river and features a canoe, but there isn't one in the photo!
