I'm enjoying another book from my Gwendoline Courtney collection, 'The Chiltons'. Kit, Peter, Fiona, Monica and their cousin Jill who lives with the family are dismayed to learn that an invalid boy Brian and an orphan girl Hilary are to make a temporary home at the Rectory. The Rector and his wife have taken them in to supplement their income. The newcomers soon settle down, Hilary, who has been unwanted and unloved by her aunt, finds what has been missing from her life with the Chilton family and eventually finds a home of her own.
All Gwendoline Courtney's books are brilliant, The Chiltons is witty and heart-warming and an absolute joy to read.

Somewhat hastily reading Ian McEwan's SATURDAY - hurrying because its the text for the book discussion group tomorrow evening! I haven't read this author before, and find the story very engaging - not dramatic or dazzling, but the descriptions and sense of how seemingly minor events create sudden huge changes in everyday living is very well portrayed.

I’m glad to hear that you are enjoying Saturday, Floragord. I’m a great admirer of Ian McEwan and have read all his novels and short stories.

Eddie, I'm embarrassed to say I'd never come across him before, the book discussion group has widened my reading horizons! Its great to know you really admire Ian McEwan's work. I enjoyed SATURDAY and will have to acquire some more of his books.

All his books are worth reading, Floragord, but two I would recommend for starters are Enduring Love (1997) and Atonement (2001).

Eddie, wasn't "Atonement" filmed with Keira Knightley?

That’s right, Chrissie. Atonement was filmed in 2007 and starred, Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Brenda Blethyn. Enduring Love was filmed in 2004 and starred Daniel Craig, Rhys Ifans, Samantha Morton and Bill Nighy.

I am reading a whole series (5 books) of books by Ann Swinfen - The Oxford Mediaeval Mysteries. Really good: set in the 14th century they involve murder and espionage! Great characters that you soon gel with. Most important to read them in order, though. They're not even costing me anything, as I have a free trial of Kindle Unlimited.

Thank you, Eddie, I'll try to find "Enduring Love" on Netflix or at the public library as we both like daniel Craig very much.Eddie Muir wrote:That’s right, Chrissie. Atonement is the only book of his I've read - much better than the film in my opinion.Eddie Muir wrote:All his books are worth reading, Floragord, but two I would recommend for starters are Enduring Love (1997) and Atonement (2001).

I have just finished re-reading Peter Guralnick's seminal Sam Philips - The Man who Invented Rock n Roll. The depth of research and effort which clearly went into this book is amazing.

I'm making my way through some of the War Saga's that are in abundance at the moment. The latest I'm reading is Spark Girl by Fiona Ford.

I'm finishing reading a biography on Claudette Colbert called "She walked in Beauty" by Bernard F. Dick which is much better than the low ratings on amazon made me assume:
