Well it's not 'red tape', it's copyright and it's the single most important thing writers, artists, musicians, filmakers etc have to protect their work. Stealing copyright is stealing from creatives, in the same way someone coming into your house and stealing everything from that, which you've worked all your life to pay for, would be.
Boatbuilder wrote:I read Rob's post as referring to the 'red tape' when Julie wrote that publishers don't want to touch untested writers, nothing to do with the copyright thing.
I agree that is everyone's protection for their work no matter what field it is in.
Yes - you are right, Boatbuilder - that's exactly what I meant - all the hoops a writer must jump through these days in order to even get their book glanced at!

Copyright is very important to me - i would be extremely annoyed if anyone stole the novels and stories I have written!

I've often designed posters for the musical theatre company I belong to, and a few years ago, did this design for 'Half A Sixpence' -

About a year later someone brought some fliers for another local companies production of the same show - and imagine my annoyance when I saw a design with same colours, same poses, same background, same lettering, but two central figures that were very much cartoonish in style. It was a complete rip-off of my design. I wasn't too happy - but as we are just amateurs, there was little I could do. :-(

Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Hooooooold it, flash bang wallop, what a picture... Seriously, Rob, that's a great design — how awful that it was ripped off, but as you say, what can you do? :x At least you didn't lose any money by it, but it must have been galling all the same.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I also think that this is a great designed poster for what it was intended, musical show. :D

Thank you both! :-D I designed around 30 posters for the company over the years - then they dumped me for computerised images and no longer required my artistry, lol! Those who know me on facebook will have seen some of the others. :-D

The Half a Sixpence poster is fantastic, Rob. Lovely poses and colours. How annoying that another company used aspects of your design to promote their own production.

I love hand-drawn posters so I find it a shame that computerised images are now used instead.

Scooby-doo: Four kids--two boys, a girly girl, and a not-so-girly girl--together with their dog, solve mysteries.

Cowboy Bebop: Four characters--two males, a very feminine female, and a girl who is often confused for a boy--together with their dog, chase criminals.

But there is still not enough similarity here for the Enid Blyton estate to claim any infringement of copyright.

Thank you, Anita. :-D

yes, I agree - for me hand-drawn designs are always better. The many computerised designs available now might look professional but they often lack any personal touch.

That's a great poster, Rob. Have you ever thought about being a book illustrator?

Thank you Julie - that means a lot, as you are a fellow artist! :-D

I did once upon a time. I sent many illustrations, including some scans of my posters, to several publishers etc, and also to greetings card manufacturers, but was rejected around 20 times or so, before I gave up! :-(

Reading back through the informative replies to my original question I see that Rob Houghton said he has written a Famous Five book himself. Where on this site can I find it please, and indeed any other Famous Five books by other members?

Have tried to search but with no luck. Thank you.

Hi - you can only access them if you are a paid-up member of The Enid Blyton Society, as they are in the 'Secret passage' part of the website! :-D They aren't available to the general public due to copyright issues.

When I do get around to paying and then joining the Enid Blyton Society, would it then be possible for me to somehow electronically send a chapter or two of the Famous Five book I have written to gauge interest and comment on the substance if not the likely flawed punctuation of my effort? I would love to have genuine, honest feedback from those who enjoy the F.F stories as much as I do.
Kind regards IW.
