Re: Articles in Dorset
That's an excellent summary Courtenay, I didn't buy that magazine only the Dorset one so its nice to hear about it . Reading my way through the Find Outers, I am inclined to agree with the comments about the amount of food characters eat! I am halfway through Invisible Thief, the children have two ice creams one after the other, at the start they had three picnic baskets between them and when Fatty treats them to tea they have meringues, eclairs and chocolate slices, and then Fatty gets another supply ordered!! Now I'm not one to bother about health warnings with food, if I like it I eat it never mind if it's 'bad for me', but I could not and have not ever been able to eat that many cakes in one go. Even out for tea as a child I'd have never been allowed two cakes or two ice creams, nor would there have been eggs and bacon followed by cereal followed by toast for breakfast! That is three breakfasts not one!

Blimey! I can remember when the leaflet first came out, but I didn't think that it was that long ago. Just shows you how quickly is time passing!Chrissie777 wrote:It used to be on the Internet. This one has a map inside, with some of the locations that Enid visited. I think the majority of formites have seen this leaflet before.

Re: Articles in Dorset
Aha, I just did a bit of searching and found it online: https://www.visit-dorset.com/dbimgs/eni ... -08-27.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It says copyright 2006, updated 2015 — I notice there's an ad for the Ginger Pop Shop included, so obviously golliwogs weren't such a problem for Purbeck District Council... The tiny picture of a map included in the Country Life article looks the same as the one in this online brochure, but with a different heading, so I assume it's a new edition of the same brochure. I had no idea there'd been one produced at all — I certainly didn't see it on my own couple of trips to Purbeck about five years ago. But I'm glad to know it exists and apparently has been republished (maybe for the 75th anniversary of the Famous Five).

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Articles in Dorset
As far as I was aware (I may be wrong) Viv was the first person to produce a 'Blyton Trail' map, probably around 2005/2006. Her contribution to the Blyton connection with Dorset can't be underestimated in my opinion. As I said, until Viv started promoting the link, Dorset seemed unaware of it!

I agree, Rob. Viv did a great job in promoting the Blyton connection with Dorset.
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.

I can't argue with you there, Rob! If it weren't for Viv, then Enid's Dorset connection probably wouldn't have seen the light of day. A one woman crusade to promote Blyton. We've got a lot to thank Viv for!

Re: Articles in Dorset
Which is strange as already the Barbara Stoney Blyton biography in 1974 mentioned that "Five on a Treasure Island" (1957) was filmed in Corfe Castle Village and along the Jurassic Coast. This was the earliest mention that I remember.Rob Houghton wrote:...As I said, until Viv started promoting the link, Dorset seemed unaware of it!

Re: Articles in Dorset
True - and yet when I first visited in around 2001 there were no Blyton Trails or any other Blyton references. It was all Thomas Hardy. I was quite disappointed at the time, and even local bookshops didn't have an abundance of Enid Blyton books!

All we were able to find was the Ginger Pop Shop and some of the filming locations (Viv disclosed to us that the early movie scene from 1957 with Timmy running into the antiques store was filmed just around the corner in what's called today Oliver's Bistro).
Was there a second book store in Corfe Castle Village?

Not on the occasions I visited. Not even Viv's shop was open then. I never got to visit Viv's shop unfortunately.Chrissie777 wrote: Was there a second book store in Corfe Castle Village?
