I was in WHSmith today when I noticed an unusual edition of Five Have a Puzzling Time on a display rack, along with a Horrid Henry book. The Five Have a Puzzling Time was a slim Hodder paperback containing only the one story, with no internal illustrations and a cover picture taken from Eileen Soper's cover for Five Have Plenty of Fun (which is a little odd, as that illustration features Berta and Sally as well as the Five). Picking one up, I discovered it was related to a McDonald's "Happy Readers" offer. People who buy a Happy Meal from McDonald's up to 30th June 2015 will get a voucher enabling them to buy the Famous Five or Horrid Henry book from WHSmith for £1. Both stories can also be downloaded as ebooks:

It seems that the offer has been running since 6th May but I haven't heard anyone mention it.

Obviously readers of Enid Blyton are all far too healthy to eat in McDonald's!!Anita Bensoussane wrote:

I wonder if this is related to the previous McDonald's campaign? They had the Secret Seven books free with the Happy Meals last year and I remember there being some sort of voucher for one or two further books from WHSMiths.

Very interesting, thanks Anita. I think it is excellent that an original piece of artwork was chosen. How much nicer and more exciting it looks than the artwork from another recent edition of this book (2014). I've been in WHSmiths a couple of times this week, actually, but I haven't seen this, yet - I'll have to have a better look next week.

The display rack was halfway up the stairs in my WHSmith!

Our WHSmiths only has one floor, and now they seem to be have more stationary-related stock than books now, for some reason, so I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't actually have copies in.

Re: WHSmith and McDonald's - Five Have a Puzzling Time
Our WH Smith is full to bursting when there are more than four people in it. There are two aisles, both of which are wide enough for only one person so if anyone stops to look at something on the shelf, the whole shop grinds to a halt. There's certainly no room for a display rack.
