I agree entirely with both of you, Rob and Jack.

It's a deep shame how negatively Blyton is generally portrayed in the popular media. It would be nice to see some more positive coverage! :(

Oh, sorry.... I was just trying to picture Ken and Deirdre in the 1970s having either a dog named Timmy or a parrot named Kiki...! 8)

I used to watch Corrie regularly, but gave up nearly two years ago. What used to be a well written, quirky series showing everyday, yet captivating characters with their occasional eccentricities, set in a slightly bizarre and archaic world has now become a nasty, miserable, issue-centric place filled with unpleasant, selfish individuals. Reading about Enid Blyton being mentioned in this way really doesn't surprise me. I seem to remember one of the regulars a few years ago (a fireman?) saying an innocuous remark that someone found offensive, and soon the entire street turned against him as though he was a terrible racist. And the producer actually sounded proud of this storyline in interviews! I could write better character-based drama than that drivel!

I've never been particularly fond of EastEnders, but I occasionally catch it when I'm with my siblings and friends. While it seems just as miserable and depressing, some of the storylines are so convoluted than it actually seems a lot more entertaining than its oh-so-realistic Northern counterpart!

Yes- Stephen, I totally agree. Coronation Street used to have humour and , sometimes, fact on it's side. Now it is just a depressing dirge.

I agree as well.
When I was a little girl my mum used to watch it all the time so I grew up with the amusing and larger than life characters, and a few years back I was still watching it (in my late 20s).
It always seemed a lot more amusing than Eastenders, and you had funny characters like Reg Holdsworth, Bet Lynch, Derek and Mavis, Curly Watts and the rest, but now these days its just like every other drama/soap, full of depressing stories, 'glam' youngsters and nothing to set it apart.
Needless to say I've not watched it for a few years now!

Most soaps nowadays seem to be convenient vehicles for the scriptwriters to get their politically correct viewpoints across. I would imagine that any reference to Enid Blyton in these programmes would be derogatory and biased against her.

The same could be said for Emmerdale. When it was Emmerdale Farm, and centred around the Sugdens at the farmhouse and Brierley and Wilks in the Woolpack, it was a charming farming/village drama. Now it is filled with murder, sex and scandal. Such a pity.

Soaps used to be quietly observant tales that reflected real life, but now they all seem to have the same producers (Emmerdale's producer has now taken over on Coronation Street!) and churn out cheap and sensational stories along the lines of the Victorian 'Penny Dreadful' :(
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

(E. Blyton, Sunday Times, 1951)

They go for sensationalism rather than real life these days. Even my Mum has quit watching them after decades of dedicated viewing.

I still haven't been tempted to come back to Coronation Street. However, the other week I was staying with a friend and watching it with her. We have the delights of a child of about eleven or twelve being obnoxiously rude to his stepmother and apparently hitting her. And from what I can gather, there's some sort of "revenge porn" storyline involving some twentysomethings threatening one another, and what appeared to be an illegal cruise (think of the car race in Grease). The only character I thought who showed a bit of depth and gravitas was Ken Barlow, but he was unfortunately involved in the bratty kid plot.

Sorry producers, you're really not selling the show to me!
