Enid Blyton on Coronation Street
If anyone on here watches corrie did they notice the mention of Enid Blyton this evening? I think it was by Faye, she was looking for a book and someone suggested Enid Blyton, Faye thought Enids books may be a little iffy! LOL

Merged with an earlier topic.
Quote from tonight's episode -
Faye buys her dad a children's book for his birthday, as he's only just learned to read - but she didn't get him a book by Enid Blyton -
"The lady in the shop said Enid Blyton wrote the best children's books...but she's a bit racist...'
GRRR!

Re: Enid Blyton on Coronation Street
How sad that such a popular TV programme should perpetuate the myth that there is something harmful about reading Enid Blyton. Some older children might watch Coronation Street, and if they're also Enid Blyton fans they might well be left confused or worried by that remark.

Oh, I think if people looked at soaps for education, they'd end up pretty stupid! Imagine having Phil Mitchell as a role model. The only 'soap' that interest me, is The Archers.

I love Emmerdale! And no one mentions Blyton on there! Well, not that I've heard anyway!!

Re: Enid Blyton on Coronation Street
Only slightly related - I suppose to the topic of soaps making you stupid - last night on The One Show Alex Jones turned to Ross Kemp and called him Grant. I thought that was quite funny, especially as he hasn't played Grant in something like ten years? Just goes to show, though, how ingrained long standing characters can get.
I don't know who Faye is, presumably she's not a legend like Grant Mitchell? So hopefully nobody will listen to her

Re: Enid Blyton on Coronation Street
The thing that annoyed me about the reference was that it perpetuated the myths we've all got tired of hearing regards Enid Blyton. It seems that Blyton can only be mentioned in 'popular culture' if she is linked with the words 'sexist and racist'. Even on the interview about the filming of The Faraway Tree these words were used. It would be nice, just once, if Enid was mentioned on TV without the words 'Racist and sexist' being thrown in for good measure!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Enid Blyton on Coronation Street
To be fair the script writers are only writing scripts that are credible. How many teachers, schools, librarians , etc. will say that Enid Blyton books are popular ,but, regarded as sexist, racist, etc. In fact as anything ending with "ist" and "ism"?

Re: Enid Blyton on Coronation Street
Agreed, but they could easily have had the character buying an Enid Blyton book and simply saying 'It's by Enid Blyton - she's a great writer!'

Re: Enid Blyton on Coronation Street
That depends on the script writer(s) having a pro Blyton agenda, as opposed to a trendy, populist "modern" agenda.

Re: Enid Blyton on Coronation Street
The scriptwriters on Coronation Street write nothing but rubbish anyway so saying that Enid was racist shouldn't surprise anyone.
