Model of Kirrin Island
Can't remember if this has ever been posted before, but thought I would share a view of my clay model of Kirrin Island. It probably doesnt fit everyone's idea of Kirrin of course! I made it quite a few years ago now...maybe 10 or 12, so its a little bashed in places!

Re: Kirrin Island
Wow that's amazing!! Love it!!
Do you mean that you made it 10 years ago or that you were 10 when you made it? If you were 10 then that's flipping brilliant for a 10-year old!
Love the texture of the waves!

Re: Kirrin Island
Wow, that is very impressive, Robert! Actually, it is very similar to how I imagine Kirrin Island - did you base it on the interpretation of the island in the 70's Famous Five TV series, because my first impression was how strikingly similar it was to that. I especially love the wreck! It is all so atmospheric and detailed. Well done!

That's really good, Robert. Cracking detail. The second photo down looks like a model of Corfe Castle!

Re: Kirrin Island
You once used it as your avatar, Robert, but it was a small image and I hadn't realised it was such a detailed model. Wow - it's stupendous! Full of texture and colour. I wish I could shrink to a tiny size and go there!

Re: Kirrin Island
That is a marvellous model of Kirrin Island, Robert. Anita has summed it up for me, I just want to be able to shrink in size and visit it.

Re: Kirrin Island
Thank you for all the great comments!
To answer a few questions - I wasn't ten when I made it - that would have been amazing, LOL - did it about 10 years ago.
I'd forgotten I'd used it as my avatar - should have posted it as a photo but I could never work out how to do this until now!
The castle was indeed based on Corfe...as it's been suggested as Enid's inspiration...even though most of us here tend to doubt that, but I thought it was a good place to start!
The overall island design was based on the map/illustration to be found in 'The Famous Five - Everything You Ever Wanted To Know' by Norman Wright (2000) , though I did alter a few details, such as positioning etc, as they didnt quite fit with my own image of things. For those of you interested, there are quite a few details that might go unnoticed at first glance - George's rowing boat on the beach, the well in the castle grounds, a secret hidden place showing the gold ingots (the gold can't be seen on the photo but it's in the hole!) and the cave where the five lived in Five Run Away Together, with an entrance from above, and a few rabbits, although most have them have now lost their ears!

Re: Kirrin Island
Amazing Rob. And it is actually very close to my own mental image / plan of the Island. Except that I have always pictured the castle as being more or less slap bang in the middle rather than at one end as in your model. I love the detail.

Marvellous Rob. Maybe you could make several dozen more and sell them to all us forumites whose own attempts to make a Kirrin Island would be met with "What is it? A pie?"
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Re: Kirrin Island
That is amazing, Robert - I guessed it was based on Corfe Castle! Not how I've ever imagined the castle looking, but truly a brilliant model, and so detailed. Yes, I think you might have to set up a little cottage industry and start taking orders for more!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Model of Kirrin Island
That's a beautiful model Robert. Like everyone else I'm a little envious. Although my Kirrin Island would be a bit flatter with slightly more sand, very reminiscent of an island near where I grew up.
