When we were children we were forever charging about, playing games, climbing trees and going for long bike rides. All that activity gave us huge appetites but none of us were fat. I've got to agree with Rob on this.

I agree, I don't personally blame sugar drinks, although I agree some of them are not healthy, but kids these days sadly are missing out on the childhood many of us remember. Mainly because parents, like my own daughter, don't want their children outside for too long, as they feel it's not safe. Sad really.

"Fizzy drinks", that is to say carbonated water, were actually invented to treat stomach problems! I'm having a hard time seeing how they could cause stomach problems (apart from the extra calories causing enlarged tummies, of course). As I mentioned before, when I had some stomach problems recently I drank an old-fashioned "Golden" Ginger Ale, which really did seem to help. (Actually not so old-fashioned because I did drink the diet version!) If I had been in England, I could have used Ginger Beer the same way.

Coca-Cola was invented as a hangover remedy. When the U.S. government made it illegal to use cocaine as a food additive, the Coca-Cola company substituted caffeine instead in their recipe.

I can't even get them past my mouth and down my throat, let alone to my stomach!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I had such high expectations for Ginger Beer after reading the Famous Five books.
I badgered my Dad to buy me some when I was little.
I was really surprised and quite sad to find I didn't really like it at all.

I hope that doesn't happens to me, if so, I will be very much disappointed. I so badly want to try it. Also, it really sounds Blytonesque. I :D

If you haven't yet tried Ginger Beer, the flavor is similar to a very strong Ginger Ale (like that made by the Vernor's company here in Michigan).

Ginger beer bears little resemblance to ginger ale (in the UK, at least). Ginger ale (or Canada Dry) is a mixer used with Scotch whisky.

Quite right, Nigel. My favourite ginger beer is Old Jamaica. It has a real bite.

Is it still possible to buy the type/brand of ginger beer the Famous Five and The Find Outers would have hypothetically drank in the 1940's/50's..

ps,should it be drank or drunk?

I got some non-alcoholic ginger beer from Tesco some years ago which I quite enjoyed but haven't seen it recently. (it is "drunk" Pete.)

I thought all ginger beer was 'non alcoholic'...or did the Famous Five spend most of their adventures squiffy?

It was until recently when a company introduced Alcoholic Ginger Beer.

Oh! What a pity!. Well, at least children can still enjoy non-alcoholic ginger beer, despite there being now an alcoholic ginger beer.
