Christmas is Coming...

Looking through the archives, I was quite fascinated by the Birns' Bros set of four Christmas Cards. Wouldn't it be great if they could be reproduced? Is there any chance of this? I would imagine that any copyright would now be expired.

I think perhaps we need a section on Cards. Enid produced numerous cards in the 1920s for both Birn Brothers and Sharpe's and perhaps it would be nice to display some of them on the website.

Me too.

Also reproductions of the Sunny Stories calendars with a new year added maybe? :D

Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes

Great Idea!
"You're so sharp you'll cut yourself one day!" Hunchy said going to the door
"So my Mother told me that when I was two years old!" said Julian and the others giggled.

I am not sure about this, but I have added every month from a couple of calendars to the Book Listing - 1947 and 1950. More to follow when I can spare another hour or two!

I enjoyed looking at the illustrations for both calendars and reading the verses. Have to admit that "The Cock and the Hen" (1950 calendar) made me chuckle for all the wrong reasons!

Oh Anita, what would Julian say! I thought that "Black Golliwog" might get the PC brigade into a bit of a tizzy - particularly if they didn't read as far as the last two lines!

I'm afraid that 1950 is a bit difficult to read as they weren't my own scans.

I see the 1947 calendar is in tune with today's calendar, so we can print it off and use it!

I have added another four calendars, so we now have 1946 to 1951 all complete. Sadly I only have two pages from 1945, so if anybody reading this has a copy of that calendar I would welcome the other ten months and possibly slightly better copies of the two months that I do have. I will add the remaining three calendars when time and energy allow!

The Ernest Aris Brer Rabbit calendar (1946) is wonderful, with some rather clever rhymes. The "Tar-Baby" story was one of my favourites as a youngster. I also like the Enchanted Wood one (1951), especially the Saucepan Man poem in which he is described as "The hero of hundreds of comical tales." I always did have a soft spot for the Saucepan Man! And Joyce A. Johnson's illustrations for the 1947 calendar are charming. Thanks, Tony!

Your avatar is so apt, Anita! I always think of you baking merrily away, and I bet you bought those pans on the stove from the Saucepan Man!

I was just thinking this morning that we could do with a new kettle. Now, where is the Saucepan Man when I need him!
