Stories about Santa's mishaps & stand-ins for reindeer?

Post by pete9012S »

The latest Journal (70) includes a lovely story from 1951 about a Pony standing in for one of Santa's Reindeer that had come a cropper on a newfangled television aerial called The Christmas Pony.

I'm sure I've read a few more stories and picture strips that follow a similar theme of Stand-Ins and mishaps. Can you think of any others?

(Refers to an averted Reindeer disaster the year before):
''' Right," said Santa Claus and stepped into his sleigh. " Brrrrrr! It's a cold
and frosty night. Pull the rug closely round my feet, please."
He was well tucked-in. He took the reins and clicked to the four impatient
reindeer. " Get along, then! Up into the air with you—and for goodness' sake
look out for telegraph wires before you land on anyone's roof! '
The reindeer galloped downwards. The biggest one looked out for
telegraph wires. The year before he had caught his hoofs in some and had
nearly upset the sleigh.
He guided the others safely down to a big roof,
where a large chimney stood.
" A kind heart always brings its own reward," said Mrs. Lee.

When we were children we had an audio tape of four of Enid Blytons Christmas stories beautifully read by Marise Hepworth and two stick in my mind ... in one, a small boy called Ben is woken up on Christmas night and finds Father Christmas cross and bothered because he the imp he has brought along with him to go down chimneys (he has got too fat himself) can't do it for some reason which I forget. So Ben goes along with Father Christmas in his sleigh and has a wonderful time going down chimneys and filling stockings.

In the other story, Father Christmas has to borrow reindeer from a zoo... again I can't exactly remember why, I think the usual crew have bad colds or something. I just remember the astonishment of the zoo keeper when Father Christmas telephones him informing him that he is going to borrow the reindeer and that there was some sort of magic ointment involved to rub onto the reindeer's hooves.

Unfortunately I can't remember the names of these stories!...
