Ah, what a lovely story — thanks, Pete. I was sorry they didn't get to keep the dog and the cat, but an exciting adventure with a few surprising twists all the same!

I used to love this story as a child, especially the magic boat with the dog's head and cat's head. My copy (in Fireside Tales, Collins) didn't have the E. H. Davie illustrations so it's great to see them - especially the colour plate, which is delightful.
