Re: Connie's Curious Candle - Short Story
One of my faves as a child...although I did feel a bit disappointed that none of my candles ever melted into an 'R' shape!
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

My name begins with C too, but I never had a candle melt itself into that shape for me! (I would have preferred a green candle, anyway — my favourite colour.)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Connie's Curious Candle - Short Story
One thing I noticed in Eileen Soper's illustrations (dare I criticise the Great Eileen?!) compared to the version I had as a child, is that the candles all look quite short and stubby - hardly likely to melt and bend into a shape of any kind! In my version they were longer and so you could easily imagine them melting.

Re: Connie's Curious Candle - Short Story
'Connie's Curious Candle' is a particularly memorable Enid Blyton story. Perhaps that's partly due to the alliterative title, though I think it's also because it's clever and unexpected, and because the candles are animated in a quite Dickensian fashion. The spookily surreal atmosphere works its spell on the reader too. If I were compiling an anthology of Enid Blyton tales, 'Connie's Curious Candle' would definitely be in it.
