Interesting comparison of the two illustrators. I have both versions (though I didn't realise it!) and although I do like the Water-lily story book version, I have to admit I'm a real sucker for Rene Cloke - who brightened many a story book I had as a kid. :-D
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Thanks, Pete. In this case, I like the 1978 one. Much better than the 1953. :D

Same here!
"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."
- E. Nesbit, The Wonderful Garden.
