Excellent! Thank you Rob - what a great little story.
I'm going to try whispering a magic word to my car's air conditioning system to see if that will effect a repair!!

A very interesting question Katharine.
There are as you rightly say, quite a few stories with Tar-Baby in the title in the cave.
Tony has kindly reproduced one that featured in the 1946 calendar:
And thanks to Tony for sharing it.

I like the three chums tricking the magpie even though the robin, sparrow and thrush all look alike. The railway quiz seemed quite difficult to me but I generally struggle with those. Thanks to Tony and Rob for photographing the story.

Hurrah - the March Sunny Stories are up! Thanks, Tony!

Enid was lucky to be feeling spring in the air on 4th March, especially as her editorial was probably written at least a week prior to publication. This year, the only thing in the air around that time was snow - lots of it!
'My Swing' and 'Here Comes March!' are delightful poems. When my sister and I were young, our grandad made us some swings and we used to love playing on them.
Enjoyable riddles by Jean Strickland and John Bennet. I had fun working out the answers.
What lovely pictures by E. H. Davie for 'The Noah's Ark Lion'. Her (or maybe his!) drawing for the Windmill Painting Competition is super too. Doris E. White's illustrations are attractive, as is Gordon Robinson's 'Grandpa' illustration, and I'm fond of the puppy drawn by Joyce A. Johnson for 'Adventures of the Toys'. As for Dorothy Wheeler's illustrations for the Billy-Bob stories, they're exquisite as always.

Yes, lovely illustrations and poems. I especially like "My Swing" — it reminds me of R.L. Stevenson's "How do you like to go up in a swing, Up in the air so blue?", which my mum used to recite to me when I was little. But Enid takes a different tack and instead of just describing the enjoyment of swinging, imagines being different kinds of birds soaring or swooping. I hope she wouldn't really encourage children to eat flies, though!
Interesting to see Enid using the name Tammylan for a female pixie, when she later used it for the "wild" man in The Children of Cherry Tree Farm.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Truly enjoyable - thank you very much Tony.
Does anyone remember being little and growing so that your once comfortable shoes started to pinch and hurt?
May be a long time ago for some including me!

Nothing to do with growing, but new shoes are still uncomfortable!

I agree, Nigel. I always have to “break in” new shoes to make them comfortable.

The 'shoes' I remember being regularly uncomfortable were the black school 'plimsolls (or as we called them, 'pumps') which we used to wear for games etc in Primary school. They were often worn even when they grew too small, because buying shoes was more important, so I can recall running around in plimsolls that bent my toes up at the ends, lol. Probably my fault, as I'd forget to tell my parents I needed some more!
