Suggested Designs for London, 1930s

I've just come across an article in The Londonist, looking at the Bressey Report of 1938 and artist Bryan de Grineau's depictions of suggestions to cope with London's increasing traffic problems. The designs seem futuristic but somewhat improbable, especially the car lifts and the car ramps going round the outside of buildings so people could park on the rooftops! Double-decker bridges feature too, and a motorway cutting through Hyde Park, while Trafalgar Square has been given over to a multi-storey car park!

According to the article, "The Second World War put any radical infrastructure plans on hold. After the war, London had other priorities, such as rehousing a bombed-out population."

Fascinating stuff!
