That's fascinating and yes I do all of those along with never crossing someone on the stairs indoors, putting new shoes on the table, opening an umbrella indoors,opening the back door after midnight on Dec 31, or stepping on pavement cracks, all of which are meant to bring bad luck. In Wales we also have never point at a rainbow and never cut your nails on a sunday.

Gosh, who knew? I'd previously read that violent sneezing was a symptom of plague so one's horrified friends would say "God bless you" presumably meaning "God help you". I avoid walking under ladders, toss spilt salt over my (L) shoulder and prefer to stay indoors on Fri 13ths, but actually do consider black cats lucky!

I don't know why they are supposed to be so unlucky or if it's a local thing but I had it drummed into me not to do either by my Welsh mum. If you rip your nail on a Saturday night it's tough luck until Monday morning unless you can bite it down enough to be bearable .Or file them, you can do that, it's only cutting them that is sacrilege!

It (cutting nails on Sunday) was always a superstition when I was a child and that was in Liverpool. I don't think it had any Welsh connection. - The superstition seems to go further afield:

I know that a lot of people don't like crusts of bread (I'm quite partial to them myself), but I didn't realise there was an actual superstition about it. Have I been eating bread wrongly all these years?
