St George's Day.

Post by Boatbuilder »

It looks like everybody on here, except myself, seems to have forgotten that today is
---------------ST. GEORGE'S DAY----------------

Why does everybody seem to think that March 1st is the day to celebrate? I'm English through and through so I think those like myself, and others who choose to live in our great country, should give today a bit more of a mention. You've got about five hours of the day left.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I hadn't forgotten either - partly I admit, because our cat Ruby arrived on St George's Day nine years ago today. She was a stray - only around 6 months old. :-D

Also...I sort of only half identify as 'English' as I also identify as half Welsh! ;-) In a way I prefer St David's Day because at least St David really did live in Britain! ;-)

Happy St George's Day.

Does anyone remember being allowed to go to school in their Brownie/Guide/Cub/Scout uniform?

Happy St. George's Day!

I remembered that it's St. George's Day (and perhaps William Shakespeare's birthday, according to some) but I grew up in Wales so I'm more familiar with the traditions of St. David's Day.

We used to have St George's day parades for the Guides and Brownies. I also remember that children who were Brownies or Guides were allowed to go to school in their uniforms on Thinking Day. (Feb.22nd)

Maybe I'm getting confused then Daisy, I do remember going to school at least once in my Guiding uniform. The Scouts certainly make a big event of St George's day. I don't have a family member in the movement any more, but we used to enjoy an afternoon out at Felixstowe to watch my son parading along the sea front before joining them for their service in the theatre. Most years it was almost full of Scouts, Cubs etc, with only a few seats spare for any parents who wanted to come.

The annual Gang Show was a casualty of the lock down earlier this month, and presumably the St George's Day parade is another.

Unfortunately parading is off for this year but Scouts are being asked to come out tonight at 8PM in their cub/scout uniforms to mark St. George's and to renew their Promise.

Thanks for the information Chris. That's a nice idea. Although as it's Thursday I'm not sure anyone will hear them as presumably people will be outside clapping.

Still, they can do their salutes. :D

Happy St George's day everyone. I've never quite understood why it is not more widely celebrated. I always remember but most of my neighbours and friends seem not to bother.

Apparently because if it's celebrated it immediately gets branded as racist/Little Englander/colonialist and probably a few "ist" and "isms" that I don't know.
