I did now! Thanks for pointing it out, I really enjoyed it. Ode to Joy took a couple of attempts though...

Classic FM's late late show presented by Myleene Klass on weekends, and sat bolt upright to take down the details at the end of the piece!

It's great when that happens isn't it!
That happened to me too with this piece of music when I heard it for the first time.

A heavenly piece of music, Pete, the sounds conjure up the sands and colours of Africa perfectly for me. The movie DANCES WITH WOLVES introduced me to another J B favourite, the magical John Dunbar Theme:

Re: Your Favourite Piece Of Classical Music?
Absolutely obsessing with Shostakovich's 2nd waltz these days. It's the one piece of classic music, alongside Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 that is helping me through the stressful days of writing my thesis and wrapping up the last months of the degree. It's a piece that fills my soul with so much tranquillity, and with the knowledge that nothing lasts forever, good and bad things alike end, and that life is but a constant flow of moments, feelings, experiences.
And of course I am always imagining myself being the protagonist of a Russian novel and dancing the night away in the ballrooms of the palaces of St Petersburg. (A little bit of daydream never hurt anyone, right? )

Two of my favourite pieces of classical music are Max Bruch’s violin concerto number one and the intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni.

Re: Your Favourite Piece Of Classical Music?
My favourites in classical are probably too numerous to mention. However, like Barnard, one is the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni - probably because it was one of the pieces I played when I was a violinist in a youth orchestra in the early 1960s.
Maybe we should have a topic in which to list out 'top ten' classical pieces.

I think that listing our ten favourite classical pieces is a good idea, John.

I'll start compiling my 'top ten' tomorrow, Barnard, but if you come up with your ten first then you can start the topic.

Re: Your Favourite Piece Of Classical Music?
I mostly seem to listen to Vaughan-Williams these days. I had a feeling The Lark Ascending would be mentioned. I think that's probably my favourite too, along with this one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCpimLb7SPM
A few films I've recently seen with memorable soundtracks are
Somewhere In Time - John Barry (again)
Cinema Paradiso - Ennio Morricone
In Love With An Angel - ? (Another Italian film. I don't know who the composer is but they're a match for Ennio in my view)
