Re: News from the Ginger Pop Shop

Post by Viv of Ginger Pop »

All through the summer the Ginger Pop Shop widow has been celebrating 120 years of the Golliwogg. I also printed and displayed the letter that was posted on the front page of this website.

The display recieved many favourable comments, and just one person was seriously angry, saying just the sight of them made her sick to her stomach.

It was partly with her in mind that I have spent the last few weeks making a YouTube film called Je suis Golliwogg; the toy that dare not speak its name.

Please view it and if you like it, leave a comment and pass the link on.

It can be seen at http://youtu.be/1lB3YAh5IlY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Absolutely brilliant work, Viv. I hope it will be shared widely and help to overturn a few assumptions that are out there!

Glad to hear the majority of responses to your display have been favourable. I'd be interested to know, if you can tell us - what was the ethnic background of the lady who said they made her feel "sick to her stomach"?

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Brilliant video, Viv. I was also interested to know the ethnicity of the woman who felt sick to her stomach. The video is great - very informative, and professionally done. I hope it makes people think, rather than just dismiss the golliwog as a racist symbol.

A nicely-presented video, Viv. Very informative and you've dug up details that will surely make viewers think.

I've now got to sort out what to take, as my lounge is stacked high with gollies of every size imaginable :lol:

I have just watched the video and really enjoyed learning more of the history of the golliwog. It is well balanced and is very well told. Thanks Viv.

Viv, there was obviously a great deal of hard work put into that video. Did you do all the research yourself? It was packed full of information, it was really interesting.

I hope you managed to sell huge numbers of Gollies at the steam fair. :D

I have contacted some of my favourite book shops to let them know about the link - I know they will
love the video. There are a lot of people out there who need to know about it. Viv is doing a fantastic job in
standing up for Gollies and this video says it all.
