The production of The Sound of Music I saw was by a local group and it was a bit like that, but not as funny! It seemed odd that Maria was the one who taught the children to sing, as she had a weak and wobbly voice compared to Captain von Trapp's fiancée, who sang beautifully.Fiona1986 wrote:I've seen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers on stage, technically. Just a local theatre group doing it but it was great fun. The best part was one brother's axe head flying off and landing in the orchestra pit mid-routine, and the second best part was the "house" rolling a few feet back each time someone stepped quickly onto the porch.

Re: Musicals
Some of my favourite musicals are: Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, We Will Rock You, Mamma Mia and The Sound of Music. I've been very lucky to see a good handful of musicals but I was, like Anita, disappointed by Wicked and I was also disappointed in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (I fell asleep!)
Has anyone seen Into The Woods? I saw the movie at the weekend and I've been listening to the music NON STOP. I really want to see the Broadway Version.

Re: Musicals
I've seen Wicked and I liked it, I've also seen Chicago in London but I didn't think all that much of it.

I haven't seen Into the Woods at the cinema, Abi, but I'll be looking out for it in the future when it's on DVD and has gone down to a reasonable price.

How I would have loved to have seen the production where Margo Leadbetter played Maria and it was so bad the council cancelled the second performance. It would make a great one-off The Good Life special!Anita Bensoussane wrote:The production of The Sound of Music I saw was by a local group and it was a bit like that, but not as funny!

Yes, it would have been fun!
I seem to remember an episode of Keeping Up Appearances in which Hyacinth Bucket thought she had a chance of being chosen to play Maria in an amateur production of The Sound of Music!

The mind boggles (I once dressed up as a goat for a sing-along with the movie version of The Sound of Music, but let's not go into that. )Anita Bensoussane wrote: I seem to remember an episode of Keeping Up Appearances in which Hyacinth Bucket thought she had a chance of being chosen to play Maria in an amateur production of The Sound of Music!
I love musicals too - wouldn't be able to say which my favourite is! I think the most recent one I saw on stage was Matilda, which was brilliant and in many ways expanded on and even deepened the themes of the book (and made Matilda's parents even more skin-crawlingly revolting than they were in the original story!). My only objection was that although the music was wonderful, there weren't many songs in it that were easily memorable or singable, and there were no big stand-out solo numbers like there are in most classic musicals. There was also a sense of darkness and gloom through the whole production, which made it less uplifting than it could have been, although it was still hilariously funny. The scene with Bruce Bogtrotter and the giant cake had me in stitches!
I must say, though, the best musical I've seen live has to be The Lion King - quite possibly THE most incredible and amazing production I've ever seen on stage anywhere. I always loved the original film, but the musical was roughly a million times better! Along with the jaw-dropping puppetry, artistry and dance, this was another one that enhanced the original story line and made it a lot deeper, with more genuine African music and cultural elements and even a few echoes of the real-life struggle for freedom in South Africa. I've only seen it once (nine years ago, now I think about it... where does the time go??), but the memories are still so vivid - really must save up and go to it again one day.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Musicals
I'm not a big fan of musicals, but the one I do like to watch every time its on the tv is The Sound of Music. I do love this musical. It has a great story line and the songs are brilliant. Julie Andrews really makes the part her own.
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

Mama Mia is a wonderful film too, Abi - I can't believe I missed it!
You are right, Gareth, Julie Andrews did very well in everything - no wonder she became "Dame Julie Andrews"!

Re: Musicals
I only like 2 musicals - one is Chess and the other is quite obscure - Freudiana, written by The Alan Parsons Project.

I'm not sure if she "did well", but I found her performance in Torn Curtain, pretty awful.Farwa wrote:Julie Andrews did very well in everything

I have not watched "Torn Curtain", so I cannot comment. Was the story good?

I know what you mean - she could have at least mended the tears in the curtain, I was expecting her to get her sewing machine out, or at least a needle and thread to sew them by hand, but no.Moonraker wrote:I found her performance in Torn Curtain, pretty awful.
Spoilt the whole film really.
