Vintage Footage of London

Post by Eddie Muir »

I thought many of you would like to see the rare colour film of 1927 London:

http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/198876/ ... e-in-1927/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Scroll down and click on the scene by the lake in Kensington Gardens where the girl is feeding the birds.

Superb!

Thanks, Eddie. I've seen it before but it's fascinating. The buildings and monuments were a lot dirtier in those days of soot and smog. No horrible glass and steel monstrosities cluttering up the skyline though! Sad to think that the economic depression of the 1930s lay ahead for those people. High levels of unemployment, poverty and starvation, followed by the Second World War.

Sorry to end on such a depressing note! Of course, the redevelopment after the war meant an economic boom and high employment levels lasting into the early 1970s.

No jeans or hoodies, and the cultural mix is definitely different! A great clip.

No hoodies - but plenty of hats!

Almost felt that you could walk into the picture - brings things back to life. The faces in the market showed signs of deprivation - for many the 1920s were still a very hard time and ironically things improved during the war, if you were a soldier, as for once you had enough to eat. Of course you also had a much increased threat to your life and to your family and friends.

Superb footage. I too have seen it before but it really is a wonderful look at the London that our heroine Enid Blyton would have known and recognised.

Such a time capsule of a forgotten London from the year that my father was born, I just love watching old footage like this. Film and TV from the 1960's and 1970's has the same effect, I always watch the background scenes instead of following the plot, it is almost like time travel. A prime example of this is Up the Junction from 1967 and of course those wonderful old Children's Film Foundation Films, but I digress! :D

Thanks Eddie,I really enjoyed that!

I stumbled upon this black and white clip of London on the same youtube page from just a few years before in 1904...fascinating! What would they make of modern London and our way of life today I wonder?? :shock:

I'm glad to hear that you all enjoyed this fascinating film. :D

I haven't been able to find the 1904 film, Pete. Do you have a link for it?
