Don't know the title of the song, or of the (so-called) artiste who moaned/whined through that all-time un-classic song with those *yerkh!* ghastly words "Hit me with that rhythm stick".......but no doubt Eddie Muir will enlighten us.

It dates before Norah Jones's era, so she can't have perpetrated this foul crime against humanity.

Agreed, Nigel. :D Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick is a great track, as is Ian Dury's recording, Sweet Gene Vincent.

Chick and I went to the pictures last month to see the film Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll, the story of Ian Dury. Andy Serkis was superb as Dury in a very interesting and disturbing film!

As children my sister and I used to run around the garden singing that. We took the words literally and would hit each other with sticks. As you can guess, our parents weren't at all fond of that song!

Im really sorry,Aurélien ,but I really cant hear a bad word against THE BLOCKHEADS the band you are refering to ......'Why not?',I hear you cry......Well its because in Feb 2007 we stayed a night at the Barrow in Furness travelodge,to break up the journey of of our family holiday in the Lake District.

I stupidly left the tailgate light on in our brand new estate car, resulting in a flat battery the next morning.
I tried to push start the car (fully loaded with our holiday gear) with Mrs Pete9012S at the wheel, but it was hopeless the car was too heavy.

Out came four or five chaps from the hotel dressed like Eunice Tollings father,I assumed they were Russian, and managed by gesture and pidgeon English to get them help me push start my car, which they did brilliantly.

Hurrah,we could carry on with our holiday...a more normally dressed man came over and said he was surprised to see his men push starting my car...

I said why is that,,,,,He said he was the mens manager, and no, they werent a group of men going to a beatle convention they were Ian Durys Blockheads! (sadly now without Ian).....,but I'm sure he was looking down with approval at their benevolent act of kindness towards me and my well laden family!

So now every time I hear the band on the radio,I think of them with fondness & appreciation :D
Regards
Pete

Hmmm.....what old Aurélien calls 'Cheesy' [in the sense of inane] is other folks cheese cake. Oh well, now bring on the Norah Jones fan(atic)s as well....I can take it - just so long as I don't have to listen to it....

   'Aurélien Arkadiusz'

Hi Ming,
Don't know which things are cheesy in your cultural sphere. But in my opinion cheesy has got following characteristics.

a) sentimental, maudlin, melodramatic, corny

b) So romantic that its lame.

c) or decide yourself here

Sometimes things are so cheesy, so overstreched that they are good on the other hand.
It's just a matter of taste or better said , a lapse of taste.

Btw....I like the songs Paloma Blanca and Save your kisses for me. Not my favs but some pleasant ones.

There was a programme devoted to Ian Dury and the Blockheads, on BBC Radio 2, last night. It is available on BBC iPlayer if you missed it.

That Chicken song drives me mad, don't know if it's classed as 'cheesy' though. Another one was by the 'fat' singer, (Can't remember his name,) and sang something about 'Save your love, my darling save your love!!!

As for Ian Dury and the Blockheads!! Sorry but I've never liked him, so I'm with Aurelien on that one. :P

Julian gave an exclamation and nudged George.
"See that? It's the black Bentley again. KMF 102!"

That was by Renee and Renato. Wasn't there a video with him serenading her while she stood at the window? Excruciating but somehow unforgettable!

Edit: Found Save Your Love on YouTube - it just has to be added to the "cheese" list:

2. Una Paloma Blanca, George Baker Selection

Does anybody remember Rick Dees & His Cast of Idiots.
This is cheesy and painful as well.
Another contemporary would say that's cult.
