Re: Usernames - Why did you choose yours?
Some interesting points here. I completely understand why people aren't keen to have their real names bandied about on public forums and I think like Courtenay (and plenty of others) I've compromised by using my real first name. I had been on a few other forums before this one and had always used variations of my admittedly teenage email addresses (so I have been known as Missy Gothic Mosher [or MGM] Missy, PinkMissy and probably other variants) and I'm also using the name NinaMarie(64) elsewhere at the moment.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Re: Usernames - Why did you choose yours?
I never thought to use anything but my real name on this and the other forum I frequent. I only started calling Moonraker Nigel after I had met him and Julie last year. Likewise Cathy whom I met at the same time. I would always respect the wishes of forumites who don't want their real identities revealed.

Don't worry, Walter. I don't know your real name so I won't use it.walter raleigh wrote:You may very well mean to show respect by doing that sixret, but there are users here who would prefer that their real name remain hidden. There are a number of people on here who know my real name but they always refer to me as 'walter' or 'walter raleigh' as they probably think (quite rightly) that I wouldn't want my real name used on the forums. Using my real name instead, in this instance would actually show a lack of respect.sixret wrote:In Malaysia, I would never ever call a person above 55 years old using his/her name! It's very rude here! I will call them either pakcik(uncle) or makcik(aunt) to show respect because they are old enough to be my fathers and mothers. At first, I was in shocked knowing that younger forumites just called older people using their first name!!! I was culturally shocked beyond belief! Gradually, I could accept the norm. I always use their real names instead of ID names to show respect.

Say the word, Farwa, and that is deepeabee's initials!
I know your Christian name, deepeabee, but have no idea how I know it! Maybe you have used it somewhere.

Yes, I do too, Nigel. I believe she used it herself at some point.

If I do that it becomes EffAyBee, doesn't work so well I don't think.

Yes, they are quite fab! If I ever feel like a change from the fallen ash, I know what I'll use . I feel like this could spin off into a whole new thread - what are your initials and do they spell anything...
