Last Song You Listened To
Re: Last Song You Listened To
For some reason, I've had the theme tune to Hong Kong Phooey going through my mind all morning!

Thanks for that, Stephen — don't remember that one ever being on telly in Australia, though we had a lot of the classic American cartoons replayed over the years. But the next video after it was this, which I DO remember being on when I was little (not that I ever understood it)...

Enjoyed watching the Banana Splits when I was young. Joe 90 was another good one. Classic!
Re: Last Song You Listened To
Even though I'm too young to remember The Banana Splits, I LOVE that theme tune. I remember hearing on the radio early in the morning a few years ago, and it made my day!

Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra - Wrappin' It Up
https://www.dropshots.com/Domino43/date ... 5/16:38:17" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
He was born James Fletcher Henderson in Cuthbert, Georgia, in 1897. His father was a school principal. His mother taught him and his brother, Horace (who also became a bandleader for a while), to play the piano. Aged 18, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he dropped the name, James. He began by accompanying leading blues singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. In 1923, he formed his first band, which played at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. This band included Louis Armstrong and Coleman Hawkins.
His bands never quite did as well as they should have, mainly because he was too easy-going.
'Wrappin' It Up' was one of several sides he recorded in 1934, which showcased the band's 'call and response' technique, which Fletcher Henderson had developed. In 1935, Benny Goodman set up his famous swing band and hired Fletcher as his arranger. They re-recorded all the 1934 numbers, but even the Goodman band could not quite capture the terrific swing of the originals.
Fletcher suffered a stroke which crippled him in 1950 and died two years later.

I enjoyed listening to the Fletcher Henderson recording, which I hadn’t heard before, Dave.
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.

Glad you enjoyed it, Eddie. That's always been a favourite of mine. It's also sometimes known as 'The Lindy Glide'. The tenor sax solo is by Ben Webster. Also heard are Henry 'Red' Allen (trumpet) and Buster Bailey (clarinet). The pianist is Horace, Fletcher's brother. As I said, it's the looseness of the ensemble that creates the swing.

Tommy Dorsey - The Music Goes 'Round and 'Round
https://www.dropshots.com/Domino43/date ... 0/22:32:08" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Several of the big swing bands of the 1930s and 1940s featured numbers by small groups drawn from them (think Artie Shaw and Gramercy Five, Bob Crosby's Bob Cats etc.) In Tommy Dorsey's case it was his Clambake Seven.
Edythe Wright was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, in 1914. In 1935 she stood in as a relief vocalist for a local band led by Frank Dailey. She was heard by Tommy Dorsey's agent and offered a job with his band. Although she reportedly disliked being a band vocalist, she accepted. She stayed with Tommy until 1939 and achieved much popularity. She died in 1965 from pancreatic cancer.
