Sandwiches
This is a more light hearted thread . Sandwiches are my favourite food and now, on a diet, I am trying to devise low fat and healthy sandwiches. One favourite is cottage cheese and chicken with a few drops of tabasco . When NOT on a diet I like roast lamb with roast potato - sounds weird but it really does taste good - and cheese and onion crisps with cottage cheese and chilli. Sausage and bacon is good too .. maybe with a fried egg!
So, favourite sandwiches anyone?

I had a Schlotzsky's deli veggie sandwich for lunch. Awesome! It's a chain deli place in the US. Not sure if it's made it's way elsewhere but I love it.

Re: Sandwiches
Some interesting combinations there Moose. I'm a bit traditional when it comes to sandwiches, I love chicken sandwiches and boiled egg ones for breakfast. For late night comfort eating you cant beat a good old ham and cheese toastie.
As a student in Birmingham we used to frequent a greasy spoon near the college which serveed all the usual fried breakfast ingredients on bread, delicious but you invariably exited the place smelling like a week old chip pan. The new breed of tortilla wrap sarnies are delicious too.

Re: Sandwiches
There's a place near me that does a great tortilla with feta and sundried tomatoes - verboten on my diet, alas.
Whenever I am in a town that has one, I get a sub. Expensive, but wonderful sandwiches.

Re: Sandwiches
If you like toasted sandwiches, tuna, mayonnaise and sweetcorn is nice. You can use low fat mayo if you're on a diet.
As regards non-toasted sandwiches, I'm quite partial to Parma ham and parmesan; Parma ham and mozzarella (has to be the real buffalo milk mozzarella though); mortadella and provolone cheese (you can get both of these from Italian delicatessens); egg, mayonnaise and chives; grilled bacon; mature cheddar and piccalilli; tuna, mayonnaise and cucumber; smoked salmon; tinned mackerel ... I could go on!
I've made myself hungry now. I think I'd better have some lunch

Re: Sandwiches
This is a good idea for a topic, but perhaps it should be dropped until the end of Rammadan...
I was amazed to hear last year that Muslims in the UK spend more on food during Rammadan than during the rest of the year. Sounds like binge eating to me!

Oh, it doesn't need to be dropped of course! We were only making light-hearted comments![Viv:] This is a good idea for a topic, but perhaps it should be dropped until the end of Rammadan...
We spend quite a bit less on food during Ramadan, but contribute more to charity and also have a big feast for Eid at the end of the month.
My favourite sandwiches are baguette with brie and tomatoes, or crusty rolls with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

Umm - maybe most of that is spent on when they break their fast, Viv.« "Viv: I was amazed to hear last year that Muslims in the UK spend more on food during Rammadan than during the rest of the year. " »

Re: Sandwiches
I think I didn't write clearly enough. It was on a week-by-week basis. Not that they ate more in 40 days than the rest of the 300+ days of the rest of the year!

Re: Sandwiches
Ah I didn't realise it was Ramadam .. my apologies . I guess how difficult that is depends very much on what time of year it falls? In high summer when there is very little darkness it must be terrible (what do Muslims in the Arctic circle do, if there are any? There is a period up there in high summer when the sun never sets at all ).

Now, it is very hot in my country (more than 35 degrees) and I guess it can be a bit hard. But thankfully Friday and Saturday are holidays so it was not hard for me.
I guess it will be a bit difficult on Sunday when I go to school!

Re: Sandwiches
Until now, I had decided to stay out of this topic because it made me hungry!!
I'm very much used to fasting, and I look forward to this time of the year very much. School days are not bad for me either - anything strenuous and I say "Miss! I'm fasting!"

Re: Sandwiches
Isn't everyone in your school fasting though? .
I genuinely hadn't realised it was Ramadam and I feel rather bad now because we have a lot of Muslims here. Heh, I start talking about food whenever I am dieting is all ... tormenting myself
