Who's the first celebrity death you can remember?
Who's the first celebrity death you can remember?
Sorry about the slightly morbid subject here, but I find it really fascinating! Mine would probably be John Lennon in 1980 when I was seven. I hadn't actually heard of him at the time, but I remember my rather upset mum telling me.

The first celebrity death that I remember is the Duke of Windsor on 28th May 1972. I was about six back then and was most impressed at seeing the Union Flag flying at half mast on the school flagpole. It seemed that every building that boasted a flagpole or something that resembled one was flying a Union Flag at half mast.
It was of course only later that I learnt the full significance of the Duke of Windsor and the abdication in 1936. Such an event today would send shockwaves, imagine the impact of it back then.

The President of Ireland in about 1974 I think. We got a day off school and the funeral was on TV. Otherwise Elvis Presley in 1977 because I had just become a fan of his at the time and was most dismayed when he promptly died. I am still a fan today.

The first one I remember was Marilyn Monroe. I was 10 at the time, and watched it on the news on a small black and white set, then in 1963 it was big news of course because President Kennedy was shot dead. Then in 1965 I remember watching this big funeral of Winston Churchill.
Julian gave an exclamation and nudged George.

John Lennon .. I was four or five. I remember it being announced on TV and my mum being upset.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
Time to die.

Elvis Presley. I was six and 1/2 at the time, which ties in around the ages most people seem to have been when they remembered their first celebrity death1 It must be about the age when we become more aware of news etc.
