Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone

Post by Katharine »

This article might be of interest to some of you.

Sadly it doesn't mention they illustrated a number of Enid Blyton books.

I was reading about the Grahame Johnstones just the other week, as I was interested in the fact they were always credited together on Blyton's books.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone worked together as illustrators on a number of books for various authors/publishers, though I think they're only associated with three Enid Blyton titles. It's well-known that they illustrated the Dean deluxe edition of The Enchanted Wood, which had coloured pictures and was published in 1979 (sadly, I think Anne had to finish it alone as Janet died that year). They also illustrated the Dean & Son Tales of Long Ago (cover and internals) as well as the cover of the Dean & Son Tales of Brave Adventure. As a child I really liked the illustrations in Tales of Long Ago but didn't realise that they'd been done by the same artists whose work was familiar to me from Alice in Wonderland (World Distributors) and two or three collections of nursery-rhymes and fairytales.

What's interesting is that the two later reprints of The Enchanted Wood are still credited to Janet and Anne, so it had me wondering if they had submitted more than one piece of artwork, or if the other covers are taken from internal works.
