We seem to have lost Tony's informative post?

Moon Castle wraparound jacket is a superb illustration.
I hate the depiction of Timmy on those Award covers. Why couldn't the artist draw the dog as described in the books.
But, as I've said before, the covers aren't designed to suit oldies like me!

It's quite possible the artist in question hasn't actually read the books. Don't forget, the current covers of the Famous Five (on which George looks like a girl and Julian looks like (Where's) Wally) have a picture of the Five in a bluebell wood for Five Go Adventuring Again — the one in which they're snowed in at Kirrin over Christmas — and Five Go Down to the Sea shows them building sandcastles on the beach.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

It's a bit confusing discussing Dorothy Hall in the same thread as Dorothy Hamilton!

It's nice to see all the Dorothy Hamilton covers together, Pete.

My favourites are Five on a Treasure Island, Five Run Away Together and Five Get Into Trouble because they're eerie and atmospheric.

The ones I like least are Five on Kirrin Island Again (the castle looks new and Quentin's tower is ridiculously small as others have pointed out), Five Have Plenty of Fun (I dislike the children's beach clothes and Timmy is lying in a position which makes me think of a sphinx!) and Five Get Into a Fix (Aily looks like some supernatural entity who has appeared to bring unearthly tidings to the Five!)

It looks like I'm in the minority here as I find the Moon Castle cover rather bland! The castle blends in with the dull trees in the background.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

It's not a very dramatic cover but it does portray a wonderfully bucolic countryside scene. The main criticism would be that it conveys nothing (or very little anyway) of the tremendously spooky and exciting story within.
