Joyce Johnson

Post by BVG »

She came from Kent / East Sussex. She trained at Maidstone Art School and moved to Tunbridge Wells on the Kent / East Sussex border. I bought her house from her in 1992 and I am tyoing this in the studio that she used to illustrate books in. She also compliled crosswords for newspapers.

She died about 6 years ago in a nursing home a few roads from here.

She left me a selection of her art which ranged from studies when she was at art college to Christmas cards and illustrations.

Hope this helps

Welcome Paul and BVG. Very interesting. Funnily enough I was wondering about Joyce Johnson just the other day, while reading a 1991 book - Amelia Jane and the Sailor Doll and Other Stories (World International Publishing Ltd) - containing illustrations by her.

Bit late to welcome Paul when he appears to have left a couple of years ago :D But welcome BVG!

I am still around!
Many thanks for the replies to my request about Joyce.
After about 2 years of no answer I must admit I had not looked at this site too often recently, but so pleased with the help and a belated thank you

hello I am new here I was looking up about Joyce Johnson as I worked in the nursing home and was part of the team that looked after her. she was a very proud polite clever lady who liked to sit in the garden drawing and working on cross word puzzles she was of the old school no nonsense we all liked her very much. she told us of her work but didn't dhow off I am now looking at her life and work. when I hear the music to dessert island discs I think of her she loved that radio show the home was in Tunbridge Wells and she was very well cared for but very independent
