Help please identifying an illustration

Post by luckraftfan »

Hello all, I am a newbie with a specific reason for posting here. I have a lovely watercolour illustration by Gwendoline Luckraft that I believe may have been intended for or indeed published in one of Enid Blyton's books.
The watercolour dates from the '20s or '30s and depicts a trio of young girls suprised by a fairy. The setting is autumnal and the girls appear to be resting from gathering berries when the winged fairy appears from behind a toadstool. Everybody including the fairy seems a little startled!
Its a very charming picture and I would welcome any ideas as to which if any of Ms Blyton's stories it relates.
Thank you - Ronan

Hmm, maybe you should post the actual illustration, luckraftan - it sounds as if it could be one of hundreds!

I spent a while in our Cave of Books yesterday, trying to find something for you. I can tell you that Gwendoline Luckcraft never illustrated any Enid Blyton books, but she did some illustrations for Enid Blyton in Sunny Stories. These would have all been line drawings however. Your best hope is that the illustration was for a Blyton story in one of the many anthologies and annuals that Enid contributed to in the 20s and 30s.

Thank you Tony Summerfield for your time in the 'cave of books' : ) Yep maybe I am barking up the wrong tree but I hope members will take a look at the image now posted and see if it rings any bells, perhaps I need to start looking further afield at said anthologies. My aim was to find a copy of the relevant book if this picture has indeed been published.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to look at this post.
As an aside can I compliment the admin on the wonderful design of your pages.

According to the Cave of Books, a G. M. Luckraft did some illustrations for Little Plays Book 1 in 1938, which contained an Enid Blyton story called "Hot Roast Chestnuts." I don't know whether that book would have had coloured illustrations though.

Sadly, not the illustration mentioned by the original poster, (see above) but it is by the same illustrator.
Rather gruesome for children's reading some might say!
