What a terrible name for a book about The Famous Five!

Post by Rob Houghton »

Saw this on eBay - only £12.69 - but what a dry sounding title!

"Dissecting the Magic"?? Now there's a mixed metaphor, not to mention a gruesome bit of imagery...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

That book was written by our very own Liam - see below.
Yes,the book will not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it.

Liam also very kindly made copies available for free to members here on the forum.

This is actually a brilliant resource. It's not a book to be read from start to finish but it's perfect for when you wonder "How many times did the Five eat bacon?" or "Did whooping cough ever come up in the 21 books?" I refer to it fairly often when I'm blogging.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Now that would be useful for a Famous Five trivia night! 8) I wasn't meaning to insult the book (let alone the author!), incidentally, as I've never seen it — just thought it was a bit of an odd choice of title, that's all.

It is actually more than £3 cheaper on Amazon (£9.07) if anyone is desperate to buy it!

I've had a copy on my Kindle for the past two years.
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.

I'm not doubting the content of the book - but the title? Awful!

I didn't realise it was written by Liam - I guess that's another black mark against me for daring to express an opinion. :-(

Although I'm sure I would find the content very interesting, the title leapt out at me as being amusingly inappropriate. It might as well be called 'Destroying the Magic of Enid Blyton'!
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

I bought it from Amazon for my Kindle when it was only a pound or two.

It sounds a really interesting book (despite the title!) ;-) It's the sort of book that's great to dip into from time to time, by the sound of it.

Which I'm sure Liam's book doesn't, but plenty of others have tried to. :(

"Dissecting" just reminds me of what we had to do with rats in high school science class... ugh. :x

That's what I mean when I say it might as well be called 'destroying' - I just find 'dissecting' to be a little too clinical and cold!

We had to dissect a fish...but we were given the choice whether we wanted to dissect a rat - most people declined and so were allowed to opt out of the lesson!

If we didn't want to dissect the rats, we were required to sit and write an essay on the topic of why we objected to dissecting animals. I just steeled myself (and my stomach) and did the cutting.

They also dissected little chicks at our school - we were hardcore! ;-) Everyone opted out of that lesson too - I think only about 6 kids actually said they'd do it!
