Early Blyton rarity on eBay

Post by Courtenay »

Hi everyone,

Just came across this for sale: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sports-and-Ga ... SwxN5WUc6F" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not AT ALL cheap, but for once the asking price may be warranted, as it is one of Enid's very earliest books and is genuinely rare. It's interesting to read more about it in the Cave: http://www.enidblytonsociety.co.uk/book ... +and+Games" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Something for avid collectors to put on the Christmas wish list, maybe? :wink:

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Not worth the money! This is by far the most common of the Birns books as I have seen at least ten copies of this particular book. I haven't even seen a single copy of a number of the Birns books yet, and only one copy of several others - that is what I call rare!! If I hadn't got a copy of this book I would think very carefully about whether it was worth paying £150 for and probably decide against! The asking price of £525 is ridiculously over the top.

If anyone is desperate to see what it is like a Society Booklet will cost you £4.77 which includes postage and PayPal commission and it is only as much as this as it has all the colour plates in it.

Glad to know, Tony — thanks. Perhaps we could now merge this with the "eBay Rip Off Merchant" thread? :x

I'm very happy with all my Society copies of these Birns books.

It's what we've said time and time again on this site. Some sellers see Blyton and they just see pounds, shillings and pence in their eyes!

Talking of rare books reminded me that I hadn't loaded Around the Zoo Book, which I featured in a Journal a while back. Now here is a rare book, as none of us knew it existed until fairly recently. I have put a link in the Website updates thread.

Well, I'm just grateful that we have Tony with his far more accurate knowledge of what is a genuine "rarity" and what Blyton books are really worth!! (I had no intention whatsoever of buying it myself, I assure you.) But as we've seen, there are always people out there who — as we say in Australia and probably the US — have more dollars than sense... :shock:

Haha! I never make statements like that, Courtenay. Not with a real expert on site! :P

I was only going by the information in the Cave, which made it sound like it was virtually unknown till 1994! :wink: But I've learned my lesson and will be more circumspect regarding such matters in future.

Compared to some Blyton books, I would still say it WAS genuinely 'Rare' - especially by eBay standards. At least it IS relatively 'rar' compared to Dean books without their dustwrappers from 1968 which are very often described as 'Rare!!!' on eBay.

It's really ridiculous what some people will price Enid Blyton books at. I thought my £90 was expensive, and yet sometimes people sell a paperback for £500 as we have seen! :evil:
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

(E. Blyton, Sunday Times, 1951)
