Re: Secret Passage - Via Occulta - Geheimgang

The Nina Bawden book about a secret passage is called 'The Secret Passage.' It is a good yarn and set at a seaside town somewhere in England. A good read but different to Blyton. Richard Church wrote a story about exploring l natural caves. The entire story tales place in the caves. Viv's museum had...

Re: Journal 74

Yesterday after work I went into the garden with a large mug of coffee and read another article: . Enid Blyton's Rogues' Gallery of Some of Her Notorious Criminals by William Ferguson (10) I really enjoyed this article which looked at the rogues in the books along with a scrapbook of possible real ...

Re: Famous Five books: possible Dorset inspirations

Hi Timv I was down in Corfe in July. The weather was glorious. I came to Swanage from Bournemouth on the Breezer bus. Running regular. I caught the train to Corfe but did not realise that it was a train ride with no stops so back in Swanage I caught the Poole bus back to Corfe. I had lunch at the Fo...

Re: The Landscape of Kirrin?

At the beginning of Five on a Treasure Island George's cousins are shown where they will sleep. P 16- 17th reprint 1968. The two boys were shown where to sleep in a room with a slanting roof at the top of the house. It had a marvellous view of the bay...... Anne was to sleep with Georgina in a small...

Re: The Landscape of Kirrin?

My image of Kirrin Cottage is on the cliff tops some way from Kirrin. It is in an isolated cliff top location. There is a front and back garden and steps down to the beach. The house is large. When you enter the house you face the stairs to the right. Facing you is uncle Quentin's office. On the lef...

Re: The Landscape of Kirrin?

Hi There is a reference to world War 2 in her book Five Go off to Camp. It is mentioned when they are prisoners in the secret railway tunnel. They are discussing the origins of it. July says, "It's possible the place was built in the last war.. maybe secret experiments were carried on here - an...

Hi,

The class also had a history project about WW1 and it was thought that Old Sam was a veteran WW1 and the reason why he had an artificial leg.

Re: Journal 70 and Alfred Burgess Sharrocks article

Having read that Alfred Burgess Sharrocks came from Stockport I took a bus there to wonder around the town. There is the Hat Factory and several other places of interest to Blyton's underground locations in her stories. Not so much as story locations but additional supporting features. There is a 19...

Re: Journal 70

Hi, This is a very informative journal. There is much that I found interesting. Enjoyed the EB article about picking books for children. The article about farming stories was particular of interest as farming in the 30 and 40 changed drastically after WW2. Would like to get hold of the GWR publicity...

Re: Corfe Common Trails

There is more to the common than I realised. Never thought of walking to Blue Pool. Sounds like a good walk. I also found that the there is much over growing of Brambles. looking through my photographs taken on one of Viv's tours. The Bridge we photographed was plain to see now it is over grown with...

Re: Corfe Common Trails

On the bus Saturday. There were 4 enthusiastic teenagers at the back of the bus. They were talking rather loudly and the bus was full of passengers who did not like the noise. In the end the driver had to give them, as Dick would have said, a good talking too. It was interesting to watch this situat...

Re: Corfe Common Trails

It was a good day and I got done what I had come down for. I would have stayed longer but I needed to buy a new computer power pack as mine ceased to function. That was another adventure finding where Curry's PC world was and how to get there! Yes I know the bus from Swanage to Poole goes by the Sho...

Re: Corfe Common Trails

Hi I was in Corfe last Saturday morning. The day was sunny and bright. I returned to photograph the hiking from West Street over the Common to East Street. Quite an adventure. The Chain Ferry is still out so I had to take the Breezer bus via Poole. The driver was kind and dropped me off at the Corfe...
