Re: Learning Welsh (and Other Languages)

Thanks for that, Daisy, we couldn't quite nail down a definitive answer so will take the term to mean a touch of emotional attachment to place or time!

Re: Back in Time for Dinner/the Weekend/School

We'd recorded the latest in this series, BACK IN TIME FOR THE CORNER SHOP, really enjoying watching how they changed and developed over the years, an interesting glimpse into how these useful places have served communities even with the growth of enormous supermarkets.

Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Oh, they definitely have horses (or donkeys) and carriages too for those who prefer a more sedate ride — I saw plenty of those when we were there. You'll love it when you do get there, I know. :D Glad to know you're back home in Wales — take care and stay safe. Thank you Courtenay, warm wishes for ...

Re: Learning Welsh (and Other Languages)

Whilst away, we were reflecting on "hiraeth" and contemplating how it could be translated into English - nostalgia, longing for home, a sense of place - anyone?

Re: What other author are you reading at the moment?

I'm starting in on H V Morton's wonderful travel books, written mainly in the 1930's - 1950's they are wonderfully descriptive and still make great travel guides. In no particular order they include In Search of England , Scotland and Wales, followed by Through Lands of the Bible , In the Steps of ...

Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Sorry to hear about your canx hols too, Courtenay, but as you say that's the way it is for now, we take the attitude of "live to rebook another day" and I've wanted to see Petra for a long time now, its a short season there so next winter will do nicely. I've been bumped off flights befor...

Re: Here are the origins behind seven common superstitions.

Gosh, who knew? I'd previously read that violent sneezing was a symptom of plague so one's horrified friends would say "God bless you" presumably meaning "God help you". I avoid walking under ladders, toss spilt salt over my (L) shoulder and prefer to stay indoors on Fri 13ths, ...

Re: What food/product would you miss most?

It's got to be good tea - because we live out in the boondocks I usually have an interesting "tea library" of different brands and flavours, but in for the long haul I'd have to vote for stock piling Yorkshire Gold teabags. We had a look at arranging a home delivery from Tesco, our usual ...

Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Gradually heading westward on our journey home from Gatwick following a last-minute cancelled holiday and have reached Ludlow - we've never seen the roads and towns we've passed through so empty. We had an amusing email from a friend in the States stating he's sitting on his porch rocking chair wit...

Don't go messing around on any strange mountains out there in Wales, look you, whateffer, to gootness!! :D  We're fortunate to have the beautiful Preselli's, a stone's throw away, so plenty of opportunity to "climb every (strange?) hill" , recently discovered Castell Henlys, ...

Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We've practically been hauled off an aircraft to Jordan, regulations changed suddenly, so making the most of the journey home at leisure whilst things are still functioning normally, before battening down the hatches in West Wales - I anticipate reams of posts to the EBS to come... ! Stay sa...

Re: What other author are you reading at the moment?

Just completing Jeanette Winterson's The Gap of Time , (a modern take on Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale ), which is the text for the local book discussion group next Monday evening. It is immensely readable, very engaging, but the story is quite "heavy", abandonment, jealousy, loss and rev...
