Pedro. I loved the bit where Jack spoke to him in umpteen different languages before finding out he spoke English.

Zoe Markham. I remember nothing about her except that I was intrigued by a name beginning with Z.

Re: Books We Read (or Were Read) at School
One story that I remember being read by the teacher at school was "The Destructors", by Graham Greene. It's the one about the gang of boys soon after the war who destroyed an old man's house. It seems a very strange one for a class of 8-9 year olds, which is what we were. (Mid-1970's.) &qu...

Re: Dad's Army
I too greatly enjoyed the Dad's Army comedy. I complained to the BBC as a child that they had changed the viewing times to a bit later -and beyond my bedtime - and received a reply that it wasn't really meant for children. Fast forward and the same programmes are aimed at family/ audiences!; What w...

Re: Famous Five TV Series 2023 - 2024, BBC
I've watched most of the first episode, but the characters just don't say "Julian, Dick, George, Anne". They could be any children. They bear little resemblence to Enid Blyton's characters.Which would be fine if they were random children in a random children's adventure, but they aren't. A...

"Children, let's give a warm welcome to our new Head of IT. He has lots of experience, having designed and coded the Horizon system for the Post Office." And Perce's late entry gets the prize. Very topical, and funny too. (There were half a dozen laugh-out-loud entries this time. A very g...

Re: Did it feel like it was set in the past on first reading?
That's the main difference between the UK & Australia I guess. In the UK you might need to go away for a week to enjoy time at the seaside, but In Australia kids can catch a bus or train and go to the beach every day if they want. Or walk down every day, if they grew up in a seaside town like I...

Re: Who do you prefer?
As I've never read the fantasy type books, I don't really know much about the likes of Moonface or Silky, so I'll also opt for Aunt Allie. She's a likeable enough character, though she doesn't really add much to the stories and I'd have probably gone for Miss Pepper than her as she adds more banter...
