Re: Betty Maxey illustrations (Famous Five)

The only one of these that I like is the one of Timmy giving George a kiss! The others seem to lack quality. I've not been completely opposed to Betty's drawings in previous books, as I grew up with a few books that featued her drawings, and some of them were quite nice, but these ones seem dire, t...

Re: Readathon - The Secret of Spiggy Holes

I've been thinking about the Dimmy not going to the police thing, and to me it doesn't seem that bad really. When Jack first spoke to Paul, he mentioned the police and Paul at once said that if Mr Diaz and Luis thought that the police were involved then they would spirit Paul away at once, which is...

Re: Five Go Adventuring Again

Yes Anita, maybe it's the convergence with the Latin languages that caused some of the problems.... :) However our use of verbs and nouns etc is still 'backward' to how other European countries structure their sentences..... The example I was using back in my earlier post about comparing the phrase ...

Re: The "modernisation" of Blyton

... so maybe it's adult minds that are the problem. I suspect you've nailed it, Nigel. Nigel, Courtenay.... I think you're right!! ;) It's not that long ago even that JK Rowling introduced a character into hte next part of her story as Winkie..... a house elf... :) The great thing with the H...

Re: Five Go Adventuring Again

I guess English didn't just get half its vocabulary from Latin, but some of its grammar too. I've read that the "no split infinitive rule" is actually a Latin rule that is "forced" on to English. That's true, Liam, if no-one minds going further off topic for a moment. In English...

Re: Five Go Off in a Caravan

An interesting and accurate observation! Though it may also have applied to "Five Go Off To Camp" too (off teh top of my head). This was always a fun and lovely excursion for the Five that resulted in a dramatic and quite dangerous adventure..... a definite page-turner! The characters from...

Re: The "modernisation" of Blyton

What annoys me about "progressive" critics of Blyton is that they both fail to understand how common a view was in the past and desperately point to a few modern-ish people from the period as a reason to treat everyone from that period as if it was the modern day. people like lilacsigil a...

Re: Five Go Adventuring Again

My version of the paperback "goes Of to Camp" was a much closer view of george and Timmy and looks even less 2D than the one you just showed!! That's pretty rubbish!! :D The second of the Eileen Soper covers featuring the spook-train is by far the better of them..... that really should hav...

Re: Favourite Barney Mystery

Yep... i would agree on both those points: both Barney, and Snubby are some of the best characters ever in Enid's works.... neither having proper or consistent parental guidance, and being completely polar opposites in character - Snubby being cheeky and mad as a brush, and Barney, sensible, quiet, ...

Re: Five Go Adventuring Again

That's a good way of putting it!! :D Betty was a good artist, and had a great talent, sadly it was used in the wrong contexts with the FF books.... :) As I've pointed out before, i like some ways that she did things - the selective detailing, etc, but I just feel that she was wrong for this series, ...
