Re: Batten down the hatches for the storm of the century?

So much for a wet windy weekend here on the south coast! Well it has been wet, and it has been windy too, but apart from a couple of brief heavy downpours, and several more showers, it's not been really gusty and it's been quite sunny. In fact I went to the gym this morning in light drizzle, came ou...

Re: Why is Kirrin Island not featured more!

I quite agree Poppy. While I loved Kirrin Island, Smugglers Top with it's mysteries and secret passages soon became equally popular with me, and I also loved the other locations that the Five visited on their adventures. I think it would have been awfully dull after a while if the Five had all their...

Re: Truly Great Acting Performances

Heath Ledger was great in The Black Knight, a tragic loss. I really enjoyed Bridge To Terabithia as well.

Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump is also a great performance in my opinion. Trying to think of others, so many but brain is still frozen.

Re: Which country?

Quebec has been trying to become independent from the rest of Canada for years, because most people in the province speak French instead of English, and they still feel tied to France in many ways. Curiously enough, if you were to visit the Hollywood / Fort Lauderdale area of South Florida over Chri...

Re: What would Enid be still familiar with today?

Enid would be proud that young people like Poppy, Icey, darrell, Abi etc were reading and enjoying her books, just as we did in the 1950s. I think that is very true. The great thing I find is that although times have changed a lot since the the period when Enid wrote most of her books, children lov...

Re: Should This Site Be Reported?

Hi Michael, True, nothing may come of it, but I have reported them to their hosting company, reported their account and also others that appear to be using sharing techniques that are against TOS to Twitter, and also flagged the site on WOT (Web Of Trust), a great free service I use that helps prote...

Should This Site Be Reported?

Ages ago I set up a free paper that gets sent out each day and which contains any tweets hashtagged with #enidblyton. Today's issue has a single post from this site http://whitestockings.be/christmas-enidblyton-book-fatherchristmas-sinterklaas-santaclause-santaclaus-children-presents-stockings-fire-...

Re: What would Enid be still familiar with today?

We drove into Lymington several weeks ago and it was market day. Not only are street markets still alive, although not selling quite the same things as they used to, but we saw a French onion seller on his bicycle too. They used to be quite common years ago, but I thought they had disappeared with t...

Re: Fawlty Towers

The episode with the Germans definitely! It's been played to death (a bit like The Two Ronnies and Four Candles) but it's still brilliantly clever. John Cleese at his best.

Re: What would Enid be still familiar with today?

I wonder how she would have adapted stories like The Famous Five for a time when the traffic is so much heavier than in the 1940's when the stories were based, when foreigners are commonplace, mobile phones help people to keep in touch, and children often prefer to listen to music or play video game...
