Re: "Editing" the books when reading them to children

that would be a pretty tiring and confusing thing to do! About the only "editing" I have ever done when reading aloud to my kids has been to change "Mom" to "Mum" when reading American books. This has been at their request though. Oh and I also remember changing "s...

Re: The moralising in the Naughtiest Girl books

Sorry to start this thread and then neglect it. I am pleased to hear your opinions that The Naughtiest Girl Again is the slowest in the series as it has encouraged me to persevere with The Naughtiest Girl is a Monitor. My own memory of these books was quite vague as I think I last read them when I w...

Re: What are your 'pet peeves' as a reader of fiction?

Probably not what you werre getting at but my biggest pet peeve when reading is having gotten halfway through the book to find there are PAGES MISSING especially when the eBay seller has described the book as good condition and failed to mention large chunks of text are missing. This happened with ...

What are your 'pet peeves' as a reader of fiction?

One of mine is authors who favour ambiguous endings to their stories. I find this particularly gallign when it is a very plot driven story, eg, a mystery, and you read all the way through, anxious to find out how the story is resolved and then just find yourself hanging at the end. Tim Winton's The ...

Re: Get on Amazon

I have reviewed a few EB books on US Amazon. A few people have clicked that button saying they found the review helpful so hopefully that means that I have converted a few potential readers. I also suggest tags like 'school stories' etc for the boarding school books.

The moralising in the Naughtiest Girl books

My 6yo has been just about jumping out of his skin the past through nights when I have been reading the last few chapters of The Naughtiest Girl Again to him and his older sister. He has previously concentrated quite well listening to me reading the St Clares books so I found this quite surprising g...

On golliwogs and nursery rhymes

Someone posted this on another board so apologies for not having the link: BBC gives nursery rhymes a fairytale ending The BBC has been accused of tinkering with traditional nursery rhymes to give them happy endings and avoid upsetting children. Re: Cricket, anyone ?

I highly recommend the audio book, Liza. The guy doing the reading just does all the voices so well. OUr big problem though was that we borrowed it from the library and then got about halfway through only to find that the later discs were scratched really badly so we never really found out what happ...

I am sure that if you think you have done well, Philip, that means that you probably have. Good luck with the results!

For the Aussies on here

I have just managed to score a whole raft of EB books from a lovely guy on ebay for $10 (!). I think he was just keen to offload them and I said that I was sure I would be able to find other Blyton fans to take the double ups off my hands. I haven't seen photos but suspect they are probably 1970s or...

Re: 70's series new dvd release!

It is probably still available in ABC shops, John. Ruth Cracknell played the house keeper in it and there are a few other familiar faces. I think my mum still has my nana's old copy of Punch and Judy which I also read as a kid. Judy was the best character. We live quite near Ethel Turner's old home ...

Re: 70's series new dvd release!

I so wish this series was available on dvd. My brother is in the dvd importing business so maybe I will ask him how we would go about petitioning someone to release it. I am sure there would be a sufficient potential market for it. There was an Australian series of Seven Little Australians made abou...

Re: Looking for Jo

Another factor is that many child actors do not choose to enter acting themselves - it is their parents who push them into it. I can't think why! My 10yo thinks she is going to have a career as an actor when she grows up (after one starring role in her school play  ). I will be actively trying...

Ooh, that could be really fun. I hope there isn't too much of a delay in bringing it to Australia.
