Re: The Adventure Series!

I'm not sure, without checking, that it was more a threat to hit poor Horace, although I know when he had told Bill that Lucy-Ann was the worst, she was highly indignant as she said she was the only one who had said she couldn't. The children treat Lucian in a kind of bullying way - in fact I know ...

Re: The Adventure Series!

but it's more noticeable in the Adventure series - especially in 'Ship' where the children's behaviour towards Lucian borders on violence! What part of their behaviour borders on violence? I'm reading an edition from the 80s I think and I didn't notice any such thing, just that they're rude towards...

Re: How much of Enid's work is 'out of print'?

That's awfully cute^! I loved phrases like "Do let's!" as a kid, although I never really knew what heather was.. actually still don't, just checked and it's a purple flower? Wow, I always assumed it was like the toe toe plants. You from New Zealand, by any chance, Stardust? (I'm an...

Do Enid books still sell very well, does anyone know?

Re: Why are Blyton's books so delightfully escapist?

The books are escapism, but not in a negative sense. I'm in my twenties but I still enjoy reading the books of my childhood (Five, FFO, Adventure, SC, Ad.4 etc) and especially I tend to read them when I'm ill. If I'm feeling sick I can curl up with an Enid book and feel comforted by the idyllic natu...

Re: How much of Enid's work is 'out of print'?

They are meant to be set in modern times? But I have many paperbacks and they still feel old fashioned (in a good way). The language with which the kids speak to each other isn't how kids actually talk these days? Nothing is realistic for the present day?

Re: Which characters are best-balanced?

I can't say that Lucy-Ann ever irritated me. I am sure we have discussed this before - maybe on this thread - that Enid might have included the very young characters so that she could explain terms through them to help younger readers understand terms that they might not understand. Lucy-Ann wasn't...

Re: Which characters are best-balanced?

I confess to finding Dinah jolly irritating at times :) but then I also find Lucy Ann a bit drippy and worshipping. Of the two boys I probably like Philip the best but there's not much in it. I can't stand Lucy-Ann, I always got annoyed at how Bill liked her better than Dinah when I was a kid. I fo...

Re: How much of Enid's work is 'out of print'?

I understand why people might find it funny or strange but there's still no need to take it out, now it doesn't feel genuine, it was better before. Also people are aware that these books aren't written in 2001..and other "old-time" references do remain. Ugh, it bothers me, I want the origi...

Re: How much of Enid's work is 'out of print'?

And I'm sure these 'classic' versions also don't contain the original text in 'Five On Kirrin Island Again' where the Five go to watch Martin's television and Anne 'gasped to see a man's face suddenly appear on the lighted screen of the set. " I can see him and hear him!" she whispered to...

I've just started reading Malory Towers, I think St Clares is a much better series, I find myself not so fond of MT for some reason.

Re: Julian - What do you think of him?

Julian is too bossy, and arrogant in a way. Dick is much more easy going and fun.

This was my first book in the series too, and it's my favourite!
