Another childhood habit that I've thankfully rid myself of!

Re: Strategy for collecting books.

Gosh - what do you do with your books while reading them? I would have thought that they would stand up to ordinary reading, unless they were falling to bits to begin with. Bad habits really. I usually read curled up on the sofa, with the bottom edge of the book's spine resting on my leg. I also te...

Re: Strategy for collecting books.

At the beginning, I tried to collect as near to the first editions as I could afford (third, fourth print runs etc) in the best condition I could get. I soon realized that, as I actually wanted to read them, not only was it impractical for me from a financial point of view, but that, as I still like...

Re: Freebie audio cassette

Hello Sue, apologies for the rather late reply, but I rarely seem to have time to log on these days. Cassette has already gone to another member. Apologies, I should have edited the ad to reflect this.

Re: Letting children out on their own

It's the terrible traffic on the roads that stops me letting my son walk to school alone! He's nine and I walk him to and from school every day. Only a few children his age walk on their own and they tend to be children who live very near the school. Anita Anita, as the others have said, it's very ...

Re: First Enid Blyton books you read

My first Enid Blyton book, and indeed my lifelong love of reading, was bought about by boredom, and how a child can get right on his or her parent's wick! At about age 6 or 7 (I think) after having had to endure my protestations of boredom throughout the day, my mother finally dug about in 'h...

Re: As I am a pedant, I am starting a new thread on this :)

The children did age didn't they? :) I intend to read the entire series again as and when I come by them but as I recall it they seemed and were described as being a good deal older in the later books than the former. You may be right, I haven't really paid that much attention to detail, but I'm su...

Re: As I am a pedant, I am starting a new thread on this :)

Kissing cousins? :D Perhaps something as simple as 'Kirrin' being an old and widespread name around those parts such as Jones, or Smith is elsewhere, so very distantly related through many generations. Or the most likely explanation, is that Enid was not going to prevent mere trifles of detail (such...

Re: William

I've never had the pleasure of reading any of Richmal Crompton's much beloved books I'm ashamed to say. I did pick up 2 of his 'William' books, along with 2 dozen Blyton paperbacks at the boot sale on Sunday, so I hope to remedy my shortcomings very soon. £380? I'm afraid my 20p copies will ...

Re: Letting children out on their own

I think we're forgetting the age these books were published in and are set in. There might have been just as much (or little) danger then for children to be out on their own as there is know, but the awareness of that danger, the almost endemic panic fostered in parents and drilled into children tod...

Re: Different editions of the videos of the 1978 series

Another thanks for pointing out that Rare TV has made a return. I thought they had gone for good. I've just ordered the "Adventure" series from them, as it's cheaper and easier than waiting for the original videos to pop up on ebay australia (plus the hassle of getting the video player out...

Re: How old is everyone?

I have similar trouble! When I started work in a fashion shop (where my 18 yr old sister already worked) people assumed I was the YOUNGER sister!! (I was 21 at the time). After that people would ask me my age and they always guessed 16-19. I'm hoping when I am 31 I will look 26 and so on! I wish I h...

Re: What Are We Here For?

I'm here because I like the fact that I've found a place where I can unashamedly talk with fellow enthusiasts / devotees about an author and her books that many people believe should, along with all children's books be left behind at the end of childhood. And they are children's books. They were wri...
