Famous Five books 70s TV series covers

Post by Betsfindouter »

Being a child of the 70s the Famous Five books I collected were the Knight ones with the photo covers from the TV series, although I have all the books five of them are from other publishers. I'd like to replace them so I have all the same ones on my shelf. They are available on eBay but I thought I'd ask here first in case anyone has duplicates they would like to sell as a bundle. The ones I need are....

1 Five on a Treasure Island
3 Five Run Away Together
8 Five Get Into Trouble
13 Five Go to Mystery Moor
16 Five Go to Billycock Hill

Surprisingly the only one of those I seem to have a duplicate of is "Billycock Hill". You are more than welcome to it though Bets. :D

Hullo - I'm trying to complete my own collection of these. If anyone has a copy of Fall Into Adventure, Get Into a Fix or Plenty of Fun with my ugly face on it they no longher want, I'd be very interested :-)

I've just dug these spare copies out of my loft, Gary, but they're not in good condition at all! Quite disappointing really, as I thought they were in better shape than they actually are! Quite shabby and tatty, really! Not much good to a collector, I'm afraid! However, I'll keep my eye out for the ones you need. :D

I'll take the Fix one off your hands happily if it's a choice between me and the charity shop :-)

It's yours if you don't mind the condition it's in! :D I can send it to you, or I can personally hand it to you when I see you in the Summer? However, If I come across a better copy on my travels, then I'll pick it up for you. :D

Fortunately, I have two complete sets of the Knight picture cover books. One set I keep stored away and they remain more or less in mint condition. The spare set are quite shabby and are just there if I ever fancy reading them. However, there's one book that's never been read!! The cover is almost perfect, with only a small crease here & there. This is probably due to being on a book shelf or in storage. There are no signs of it being read at all, ie no crease in pages/spine, etc. The down side is...there's a booksellers mark stamped on the inside cover!

I'm impressed number 6 -

I have a complete set of Eileen Soper illustrated Knight paperbacks and a full set of the earlier Betty Maxey illustrated knight paperbacks except for just one book - thanks to Eddie hunting down an amazing selection of pristine Maxey's recently for me!

I think your collection is pretty impressive, too, Pete! I think it puts my lot in the shade! :D I obtained the first set of F5 TV cover books quite quickly as the series progressed, replacing the line drawn ones I'd bought earlier. The second batch came several years later from a second hand book store as a job lot. I think I paid £5 for all 21 of them. They were tatty and well loved, and not worth more than I paid for them. How long did it take you to collect your ES and BM sets? :D

I got the Eileen Soper knight paperbacks complete for about £20 a couple of years ago - to be honest I bought the set to get the Betty Maxey internals. It was a bit of a disappointment to discover this was a complete set of Soper paperbacks!

So I had to keep on scouring the land for the Betty Maxey versions. Recently Eddie has found me a batch of Betty Maxey paperbacks in superb condition.

I now just need one Betty Maxey paperback:

One thing I like about the photo cover versions of the Knight paperbacks is that you are guaranteed to get the Maxey internals.

I did buy this version of Adventuring Again as I just couldn't locate the earlier paperback with the Maxey internals:

I have a complete set of the Hodder hardbacks too - they seemed much easier to locate than the newer paperbacks!

It was a pleasure, Pete. Delighted to have been of service. :D

I’m keeping a lookout for the missing paperback, Five Go Down to the Sea.
