Nigel's "like" button is a good idea. I do read Rob's serial but not every week, I usually like to read four or five chapters together in much the same way as you would with a proper book.

A good idea John if you're strong-minded enough to do that!

Of course, people's views may have changed since then.

I think that's a good idea, the 'like' button. Then at least Tony will be reassured that his work is being read and appreciated.

As mentioned by Rob, somewhere else I think. You don't know if your work is being appreciated if no one acknowledges, and then you begin to think, why do I bother!

Agreed! Its. Not that we need praise constantly...and I'm sure Tony would agree - but particularly if you're quite self-critical of your own work, as I am, its easy to think no one is reading it because its absolutely awful...or because people just have no interest in it. Often i think im being a bit stupid to hope that people might be reading what i write. so a way of being able to tell if someone has been looking at it would be brilliant!

Personally I am not in favour of a 'like' button as I think it is virtually meaningless. To give an example, Nigel normally announces the publication of a new Journal on our Facebook page. The last one that I bothered to look at had 24 'likes' and 21 of these people had never even seen a single copy of the Journal. How can you 'like' something when you haven't even got a clue what the Journal looks like!

I don't use Facebook but perhaps the people who 'liked' the post about the journal were people who, even if they're not subscribers, were just saying that they liked the fact that a new journal had appeared because a new journal is a good thing.
If I was on FB I would 'like' posts like that because even though I'm not currently a subscriber, I would feel pleased that there were new society things going on.

I know we have quite a few forum members here who, while not being subscribers, are regular posters and are huge and loyal fans of Enid and her work, so even if they can't 'like' the actual contents of the journal, they would probably like the fact that a new journal had come out because it's a positive thing.

Of course, I may just be talking out of my hat because I have no idea who the people actually were, but I think its certainly feasible that non members would like the good news that a new journal was out.

I agree, Carlotta - and IF there was a 'like' button for things like the weekly serials, or additions to the cave, or a new Journal page etc, then it would at least tell the contributors that people are looking at things and that they haven't gone unnoticed.

Thanks Rob, and I think it would show that there really is overwhelming support for everything here, both from subscribers and non-subscribers.

For example the serials section - even if I can't currently read any new ones, I would definitely 'like' the announcement because I would be pleased for you and Julie when you had a new story featured here.

Also the weekly letters - even if I didn't have any comment to make I would 'like' it because I had read it and enjoyed it.

People won't press 'like' on something unless they do actually like it, so if things on here got 'likes' then obviously people are enjoying them and the likes are genuine - they wouldn't press 'like' if they didn't like it!

I would happily 'Like' your comment if I could!

I think a 'like' button could be a good addition to the site. Maybe it's a sad indication of the times we live in but I think many of us would be much more inclined to quickly tap 'like' on something we've looked at than to take the time to craft a written reply to it.

I think Cathy has made wise comments and I agree with her totally. I vote for "Like" button.

I wouldn't welcome the idea of people just clicking on a "like" button instead of writing a comment. A thoughtful comment on some aspect of a post or a story means so much more, is interesting to read and often provokes further discussion. Clicking on a "like" button doesn't require much effort, so some people may do it carelessly or from a feeling of duty or pressure, without necessarily having given the "liked" post or story a careful read.
