Surely a little jesting can do no harm? No harm at all I'll say. I visited Ebay earlier this evening and bagged a copy of the The Famous Five - The Musical: Smuggler's Gold which I will thoroughly look forward to watching. Musicals sometimes carry the spirit of the original book, films such as Oliver! certainly do this. (I still have reservations about those Cockney knees up routines though!)

Further to this discussion, I have now finally got around to watching my recently acquired Ebay VHS of The Famous Five - The Musical: Smuggler's Gold. I did have my doubts about a musical version of the Famous Five, especially a singing George, but Smugglers Gold laid rest to those fears. It is amazing how a stage production with a small cast and minimal scenery can fully convey the spirit of the original books. The cast played their roles extremely well and certainly looked the part. In particular David Powell Davies was very convincing , he captured Uncle Quentin's appearance and mannerisms very much as as depicted in the books.

All in all, the best £1.49 I have ever spent!

EDIT 27/01/08 Having just rented the Sugar Rush DVD box-set, I have just discovered that Olivia Hallinan played the lead role in this series. What a versatile actress she is! By way of coincidence she acted opposite Jemima Rooper in one episode.

Did you know that Jon Lee, who plays Julian in the Famous Five Musical, is now voicing Old Ju's "Son" in the New Famous Five?

Just something I know!
"You're so sharp you'll cut yourself one day!" Hunchy said going to the door
"So my Mother told me that when I was two years old!" said Julian and the others giggled.

I guess you could say that I knew it too, as I tried to get Jon Lee to the Blyton Day. Sadly no luck as he is currently in California!
