The Enid Blyton Society

I like to take my time reading the Journal but I was even longer this time. I went away on holiday and forgot to take it with me but I've now read every article and story and enjoyed them all. An outstanding piece was Ilsa Cheeseman's Anne Kirrin's Diary, now we know the relationship between Quentin and Fanny Kirrin and how they met. A most imaginative piece of writing.

I'm not a fan of film adaptations, I much prefer the written word but I enjoyed Nick Hopkins' article on filming the Secret series and what it takes to bring these stories to the screen.

I found the letter from Enid very interesting, Chris Poole must have been listening closely to the story to spot such a small error. And the cherry on the top as always are the uncollected stories, Prince Furious and the Spanking Slippers must be Enid's best title. Thank you for a splendid edition of the Journal.

If anyone had doubts about Enid's wonderful imagination, then this is a must-read. What an imagination. I too closed my eyes when Enid shut the gate, and I was alongside her - taking in the wonderful view of golden buttercups and big, white daisies. I longed to stay when Enid decided to leave. Oh that she stayed until the dancing fairy-folk got there. Oh that I could have stayed with her.

Incidentally, we watched Secret of Moon Castle (Cloud 9) yesterday - my grandson chose it. I wonder why Jack Trent left the Mannering household and skipped over to the Arnolds to be adopted? The plot also seemed to pinch some ideas from Mountain of Adventure, with people thinking they could fly after drinking the potion!

My grandson wanted to know why the girl was called Piggy. We had to explain that that was how people from New Zealand spoke.

Nick Hopkins mentioned this in his excellent article (which I think I forgot to mention in my review). I must watch the rest of the series to see how far they wander from the original stories.
