I find that a nice warm rope around the waist saves the need for extra clothes.

Every year when André flies to Florida in February, we usually get a heck of a blizzard. Last year I was snowed in for 3 days, before the municipal plow trucks came and before our snow removal man was able to get through with his pick up truck (I actually enjoyed it and thought it was quite exciting...a little adventure on my own :)).

Often the blizzard is accompanied by one or two days of power outage. So I'll prepare for that as well plus get enough groceries in case I cannot cook and buy plenty of mineral water. Usually we filter our water and then fill it into bottles, but with power outage the refrigerator doesn't work, so bottled water is a necessity.
We have lots of batteries for torches (or flashlights as they call them over here).

Of course our smoke detector always waits until my husband is out of town and THEN starts beeping very loudly, driving our dog nuts.

Lucky Star, I have a back problem since 2007 and need to wear a back support belt during the day. It works with velcro. Not only does it keep me warm, it also is a good protection from Cody's claws when he jumps at me.

I don't think it is the amount that is pertinent here, but where demands on one's pocket are severe and income might be low, it is a matter of prioritising. Look after the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves, as the old saying goes. Therefore, in budgeting people have to start with the essentials and hope there is something left over for other delights. £10 is a lot of money of you need to turn the heating down to reduce your bill. Although the Society Journal is a wonderful publication, £10 buys 40 pints of milk! The fact that it is 20p a week is irellevant, as it can't be bought by a weekly payment! If I added up what I spend in beer in a year, I would be immediately teetotal.

Thank you, Nigel and Cathy, for both of your comments/explanations.
And no, I didn't feel criticized at all. Not when it's being said in such a gentle way.
I know that I often tend to see things too one-dimensional (sp?). I apologize for that.

I have rejoined, and received Journal 61 and a couple of other items from the online shop this morning. I'm looking forward to reading them - thanks Tony!

I'm still swinging on the gate waiting for the postman to deliver my journal.
The overseas Christmas cards arrived exactly one month late so I was hopeful the journal might follow soon after, but it hasn't.

Gosh - you have been waiting a long time, Lenoir. :( I remember you telling us about a lengthy postal strike a couple of years ago. Are the problems still going on, or is this unrelated? I hope your Journal hasn't got lost in the post and that it will reach you very soon.

By the way, I consulted your Journal Index twice last week to find out various things. It's an extremely useful document!
