Re: Journal 43

I have just finished reading journal 43, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

My highlights:

Laughing out loud at the quotes pulled from a certain anecdotage.... "the renown tardiness of pigs" for example. I could see what he meant with them all though, and it was a simple case of awkward phrasing or word choices, though the last one about the Queen Elizabeth family and the Rubadub mystery had me scratching my head.

The article from Nurse I thought was wonderful, as a children's nurse I know just how valuable those sort of murals are in distracting a child from a their illness or treatment. Raigmore hospital's children's ward (Inverness) has murals in all of the bays, and treatment rooms and even on the windows. Sadly, I didn't spot any Blyton characters.

I also enjoyed the Eligible Batchelor, although the constant capitalisation of words made it very difficult to read!

I'll stop now, as I could probably continue listing the whole contents!
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Well, just received my first journal (43) and wow, theres another due out shortly....( I opted to get the latest mag right away even though theres another journal soon!)

I was so very sad when Michael Rouse announced there was to be no more Green Hedges Magazine around 2000.

Michael Rouses Green Hedges magazine was one of my favourite reads....

As I compared some of my older Green Hedges magazines with this my first from The Enid Blyton Society, the quality of the paper our journal is printed really stood out...

The content and writing quality is of an extremely high standard also.
Colour pictures and a well thought out list of contents makes for a varied read on a variety of subjects.

Some things havent changed though....re-reading my Green Hedges circa 1999 made me smile to see letters and comments from all those years ago from none other than Eddie Muir and also Anita Bensoussane!!!... (Surely they must have been like Julian both in their 'teens' way back then! :D )

I have to come clean and admit that Anitas review of TFFAPA was extremely fair, honest and written in an informative style that really does give the right perspective on this book on which so much has been written.

So,many many thanks to Tony for this excellent journal and I now feel that after all these years I have the best of both worlds......a top class Enid Blyton Journal and a fabulous Enid Blyton Website.....

Finally,if you are perusing these forums and are wondering whether or not to take the plunge or not,I say go for it,if you love Enid Blyton you will not be disappointed!.....(and no,Tony hasnt offered me a free subscription to say that....at least not to my knowledge!! :D :D )
Best Wishes

Pete

I would second that, and add my appreciation for both the journals and this website. I've had three journals so far (joined the Society last May, same time as the joining the forums), and it's clear how much work and thought goes into them. They contain such a good selection of reviews, short stories, snippets of Enid's letters and imaginative or amusing articles such as Bill's diary and the article written by Timmy (with a little help from Julie of course!), that they are quite a resource in themselves. This website is fantastic too. The forums are great, but the Cave of Books has to take the honours. We're very lucky to be able to browse through the lovely old illustrations any time we like, and look up reviews, which I always find adds another perspective or insight to my own impression of a book.

Pete, don't forget to check out the continuation novels on this website!

If Eddie was in his teens, I wasn't even a twinkle in my Dad's eye!

It's great to find someone else who remembers Green Hedges Magazine - I've still got all mine on the shelf next to my Enid Blyton Society Journals.

I'd second that. One of my favourites is The Mystery of the Disappearing Tramp by Robert Houghton.
"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."
- E. Nesbit, The Wonderful Garden.

Nice to hear you've joined the Society, Pete. You won't be disappointed in all it has to offer. You can now browse through the archive section on the site at the photos of Enid and of course the continuation books. All fantastic reads.
